noticed car has been very smokey recently both cold (of course with the weather but also when engine hot, and very smokey after a hard drive if i give the throttle a blip, and the smoke stinks, no signs of HG except the white smoke, any ideas? :(

It's most likely nothing! Unless you just put in a new cat or your timing is making you run hotter, but like I said it is most likely nothing! If it ain't broke don't fix it!:secret:

Its probably you stem seals mate. Do you get a little puff of smoke when you first start the car up and when you hit vtec ? if so this is most likely your problem. Do a compression and leak down test if you can to make sure your rings are ok. Dont take the guys above advice if it actual smoke.

if you think it is stem seals, go to a steep hill and let car roll down in 4th gear, engine braking. This will create a vacuum in cylinders and if stem seals are gone, it'll throw out blue smoke.

stem seals or pistons rings. Does it do it if you make a hard pass or when you are decelerating while still in gear?

its not right to be chucking out that much smoke "kasper", and as i said it stinks like a chemical burning smell.
had thought it could be the stem seals but after a hard drive it should not smoke not smoke, (also smoke would be blue tinged like pistons rings)
think best bet is i get a comp test done. :thanks: for the suggestions guys!

Its ok mate, ime glad u never just took kaspers advice. Try and get a leakdown test done to. How many miles are on the car ?

rich, engine has done just under 85,000 miles, other than this seems to be running strong, bit of crack to the nuts as i changed for a b series honda due to the constant headache on my starlet turbos'....
to be honest im getting the feeling it could be the HG, but all in all what are the prices i would be looking at if it were any of the above problems?

I tell you what mate, get the car warm and let it idle on the spot for 5min or so and give a good rev. If you get a big puff of smoke its most likely you stem seals. I can not see it been you headgasket unless your car is pussing some serious power. Honda headgaskets are bomb prof mate trust me on this. Like i say though get a compression test done and if you can a leak down test to. The compression test will alsn tell if you headgasket is gone. I personally think its your stem seal though as its such a comon problem with that sort of milage.

The stem seals. It might work on a motorway etc but rev will eventually drop, if you do it on a hill revs will sit the same till you reach the bottom so you'll notice it easier.

:please: people people he never wrote what color the smoke was I assumed white cause usually people complain about white not blue everyone knows that blue is oil, white is coolant, black is gas. Don't throw the book at me I guest I'm misunderstud the question :nice:!

If it is blue smoke I would usally check it by compression test first(ring, gasket, warp, or cracks) than give it an oil change, but add lucas oil stabilizer (it gives you better lubraction and sealing also helps bearing filming) to see if it is your seals!
