I'm thinking of taking my motorbike test in a few months maybe. I've ridden a few rev n go motor x bikes in my teenage years but I've always wanted a road bike.

A couple of my family members are really against me getting one, plus Ive heard all the stories of motorbikes being 2 wheel death traps etc:nerv:but are they really that dangerous?

I don't intend to use the bike everyday as I've got the 9, so it will just be ridden at weekends and in the dry.

What dyou think?. Shall I go ahead and do my test or just stick to 4 wheels?

Thanks

Their only as dangerous as you make them. Only do crazy stuff on it when you feel you're skilled enough. If you think it'll be fun (not to mention gas efficient) to own one, go for it.:nice:

hi there
i ride a kawasaki ninja zx-10
i feel alot more comfortable on 2 wheels rather than 4....
id recommend starting on a slow bike to start off with, maybe a 250cc or 400 max though:nice:

Thanks for your input guys.

@ *SPOON* -You feel alot more comfortable on 2 wheels than 4? thats good to know mate:)
How long have you been riding for dude?Have you ever fallen off before?

Ive been having a look on a few other furums and many people seem to start off on 600's? But I would have thought it would be best to start off small on a 250 or 400 like you said:) Is there any 250's or 400's you would recommend for a starter?

Cheers:nice:

start on a cheap beater 250 or 400cc bike, it is always assured you're going to drop it while learning to ride a motorcycle, buy some decent gear (helmet, jacket, gloves, armored pants, boots) & enroll in a motorcycle riders course. ride it for a season or 2 to rack up the necessary skills & experience until you are ready for a bigger more powerful bike.

they scare the **** outta me honestly. If it ain't got 4 wheels and an interior, I don't wanna be on it on a public road. The worst part of bikes is not you or the bike itself, it's everyone and everything else. My friend has wrecked his bike a lot and mostly cause of other people and a deer (he's lucky to be alive after hitting a dear at 70MPH). Most drivers have no regard for motorcyclists. Our Civics may be tin cans on wheels but at least they are more visible and other drivers will pay more attention.

You don't have to be doing crazy stuff to have a bad accident. My dad once got mashed up pretty badly just riding to work one morning, the bike slid on ice and he went under a dustbin lorry (garbage truck) on the other side of the road.

Also he was at college with a guy who hit a car that pulled out of a side junction - took his leg clean off at the hip...

Needless to say I wouldn't get one even though I think Ducatis are gorgeous machines:

i would say, go for it!
but it is true, sports bikes are difficult to ride. when you turn in a sports bike, you really have to lean into it even when going slow.
would recommend for a first bike, get a 250cc. Stay Honda, get a Rebel or Nighthawk. good beginners bikes.
and remember, practice, practice, practice! i took a weekend learners course and fell once, but passed the course.
come to find out you cant brake while doing a turn, even if its a slight turn.
WHO KNEW!

I just solled my YZF R6 and i`m depressed. 2 wheels are a second nature. I`ve came through many problems and have dealt with tough situations riding my bike. But things came to a point that i had to use the "box"..... I say GO FOR IT!!! Use proper and authorized gear at all times and for the shortest distances. Always try to predict what can go wrong and what you should do to not be involved in it. Never ever try to prove anything to others. Drive for yourself and have fun! when it starts to get scary, it means you`re doing stupid things.

The yamaha XT super moto is a school!!! especially the single cylinders!!! They only came out as enduros but it`s a common conversion. Keep us posted!!!

iv got my motorbike licence and im 18. i wanted a road bike for a while but iv decided to stick to off road. its alot more fun. you said your going to use the bike as a weekend toy. if you think about it thats alot of money just to see if you like it or not or just to use for weekends.

if you are serious about riding on road id advise something supermoto'd. for one there a hell of alot more fun, there very tall bikes and you will be seen more easily and people will be less likely to pull out on you. (bar the morons) sports bikes are uncomfortable and imo boring. 150 mhp is easy on a motorway/dual carrigeway.

my mate has just bought a gsxr 600 and he is going to die soon the way he rides it. and hees saying he wants a faster bike. he cant ride the one he has to its full potential

as someone said before bikes arnt dangerous its the person behind the bars. but you cant account for morons. just to add something else have you ever thought of going off road? iv been doing it for years. dosnt cost as much and you less likely to die.

Cheers again for the input peeps.

@ DanF - Tbh with you, offroad/motor x bikes have aways appealed to me more than road bikes dude:) Thing is I can't ride one to save my life...one with gears anyway lol.

I just thought it would be better to do my bike license then I could ride both road and offroad bikes?

Its funny you mention supermotos as I really like them. I also love the gsxr 600's too (especially the k7's). Was this the first bike your mate bought after his test? I've read that they're pretty good bikes for first time riders, but just make sure they're restricted for the first few months untill you get used to the power.

So you reccon for a road bike a supermoto would be better suited for a new rider on the road?
Could you suggest some supermotos to me?

Also what about offroad riding? what would be a good bike to start of on i.e. kx, rm 125 etc?

I was watching this youtube vid a few months back of this one. Looks amazing but I think its had custom bodywork or something. Any idea what it is?

I've been riding on the road for 7yrs now and am riding my dream bike a Yamaha R1.

HOWEVER THEY ARE DANGEROUS............ FULL STOP.

It not a matter of IF but when.

You have to ask yourself what have you got to lose and leave behind???

I love bikes and can't live without them i live and breath them but they scare the hell out of me how dangerous they are. I have lost 2 mates now one that was really really close to me.

Only you can decide but IMO they are fantastic and miles better than cars.

Just my take on it.

Cheers for your input dude. Sorry to hear about the loss of your friends:(

Dyou think offroad bikes are slightly saver as said above?

I think I'm swaying more towards getting an offroad bike now as it seems to make more sense i.e. the bike is just going to be used as a weekend machine not my daily commuter. Also after reading some of these posts, riding on the roads seems really dangerous:nerv:

hi mate my first motox bike was a ktm 125 i was only 16 and managed fine just got to get the hang of it. offroading is much safer the on the road imo as you never goin to be goin as fast and there is cars to watch out for. motox is great fun i would suggest you get a ktm 250 sx or something along the lines of that . you be surprised at the acceleration there mental .

I love bikes! they are as dangerous as you want them to be, its like driving a car, only difference is in my opinion that you get less respected by the car drivers and that is what makes them dangerous *also you have less metal around you for protection :S
Get something nice and slow\medium powered top 500cc and some nice gear, remember its your skin on the road gets burned on a bike

Well i have just got in from my bike ride today covered 170 miles in one hit. Was fantastic. No form of bike is safe. On road or Off road. However you do limit the 100mph plus with offroad and less idiots to encounter. So really its down to your own personal preferances. There a risks in everything we do. And to be honest i don't feel any safer in my tin box as what i do on my bike.

Hi,
The Drivers make anything Dangerus not the rides!!!So get good gear and go get one :D.And you save gas,and time.

Cool. Thanks for your opinions. I'm definately swaying more towards an offroad/supermotard bike now. I've joined a couple of bike forums etc so I'll get some reading done before I rush into anything:nice:

id always say off road was the way to go for fun on bikes, its just safer. no cars to hit that are coming the other way, all the tracks have marshelles (spl) and first aiders on site. its so much fun getting airborn and powerslides are ace. just persever with the off road and it will come to ya with time. as with anything start small, a 125 maybe, and stick with that untill you cant go any faster then move up. never ride somthing that is intimidateing, because you wont get the best out of it. as for ktms there not something id recomende for some one new to off road. there really twitchy and get head shake at high speed. and there really unreliable.

i had a 2 day race this weekend the only problem i had was running out of petrol on the second day, which i was not impressed by lol. but the amount of dead ktms i saw was unreal. iv got a gasgas 250 its a fantastic bike great chassie and engine and a really easy bike to ride

on the GSXR 600 in my opinion its one of the worst first bikes. the suspension is very hard on it and its twitchy in corners and its one of the most powerful 600s out there its alot more of a track orientated bike. honda CBR 600s are the most user frinedly as there more set up for road use, nice soft suspension gives you loads of confidence in corners.

id recomend supermoto bikes just because its easier to get yourself out of terouble for example if you get into a slide or the front steps out due to the bigger bars. the guy on that video is ryan moore he is awsome on that thing. they have a web site. hees got a modified honda CRF 450.

SUPERMOTOSTUNTS.COM

i could go on about bikes all day lol but in short off road, and a bike licence ftw but leave the on road stuff theres too many nutters out there.

Thanks alot for that mate. Lots of interesting info there:nice:

Is there any legal offroad places you'd recommend in the North West?. I've got tonnes of great woodland, fields and forrest etc near my house, and although quite a few moto x guys ride there, they're always getting harassed by the police. I've seen some of the more experienced riders with balls, taking chase from the police at times near my house, and always seem to get away. But as I'm going to be a total novice I would'nt fancy my luck taking chase from the cops lol
