Hello,
I was after your advise on gear ratio's.
I am after an LSD gearbox to go in my EK4 (B16A2)
My initial thought was to go with the S80 DC2 Integra box, but then there is the EK9 box too and posibly others?

Can somone explain the differences please.

Thanks,
James.

The ek9/ek4/96 dc2 actually have the same ratios(ek9+96 spec teg have dual synchros in 2nd 3rd 4th+race bearings + LSD) ,so go for the s80 ne3 out of a 98 spec teg mate it's a great box :nice:

EK9 BOX :

1st: 3.230
2nd: 2.105
3rd: 1.458
4th: 1.107
5th: 0.848
Reverse: 3.000
Final Drive: 4.400

98 SPEC ITR BOX :

B18C (JDM Type R):
S80 (Helical LSD)

JDM Type R transmissions are the best for all motor applications where acceleration is emphasized most. All 98 and up JDM Type R transmissions came with 4.785 final drive with the same 1st, 2nd, 3rd gears as the USDM Type R. To make highway driving more tolerable, the 4th and 5th gears are the same as GSR transmissions. Look to spend between 1400-1600 for these transmissions because of their final drive and rarity.

Here is a look at the specs:

1st: 3.230
2nd: 2.105
3rd: 1.458
4th: 1.034
5th: 0.787
Reverse: 3.000
Final Drive: 4.785

In conclusion, this transmission is good for all motor and should bring between 500-700 if its hydraulic while cable transmissions are worth between 400-600. Please be careful that the transmission you're buying doesn't have bad synchro's because a lot of them have been beaten on and this is the first problem you'll have. Plus, if you're making a lot of power, 170 to the wheels, be prepared to replace your differential because these can be broken with regularity.

96 SPEC ITR BOX:

This transmission is one of the best B-series transmissions Honda has offered in its vehicles. Every gear has dual synchro's and the gearing is perfect for all motor applications. Plus, LSD is standard and will be stamped on the housing. Look to spend between 1200-1400 for these transmissions because of their quality, LSD, age and gear ratio's. Finally, if there is some question about whether or not you're S80 has 4.4 final drive or 4.7 final drive you can check the transmission housing. The code "4jhd" means 4.4 final drive was offered as original equipment, while "ne3" signifies 4.78 final drive.

The specs are below:

1st: 3.230
2nd: 2.105
3rd: 1.458
4th: 1.107
5th: 0.848
Reverse: 3.000
Final Drive: 4.400

You can save costs as well as get far better performance by just keeping your B16A2 box, and installing a Quaife LSD (or Kaaz/Cusco if you track your car a lot) + close ratio gear set. This would prob cost you < £1000

vtec,
Could you please tell me what gearbox you are saying to get as i am unsure on what your saying?

S80 "4jhd"
OR
S80 "ne3"

Also where on the box will this be stamped? in the casting or on the Lables?

Thanks,
James.

I`m not so sure there`s a 4jhd...
anyhow, the only difference between the 2, is that the ne3 i think has 4,785 final drive instead of 4.4 of the j4d. All 98 and up JDM Type R transmissions came with 4.785 final drive with the same 1st, 2nd, 3rd gears as the USDM Type R. To make highway driving more tolerable, the 4th and 5th gears are the same as GSR transmissions.

What so the S80 ''NE3'' is going to be better for my B16A2 or not?

The car will accelerate faster because of the 4.78 final drive, so yes It'll be better, but you can change the 4.4 final drive to a 4.78 any time if you decide to buy the other gear box, if the price are the same or the gap is less than 500, go with the ne3 one.

It all comes down to how much you find a box for. As mentioned above, if it is over £1k, keep your existing box and just upgrade the internals.

Your gearbox will be smoother, more reliable, and, for the most part, far quicker :)
