looking to do as many track days as i can from now and looking into helmets

do i need ones to meet any specs?
or can just any helmet do?
thanks

For track days any helemt will do mate!

Open face helemts are better for visibility porpoises but you look a little silly IMO.

So just go for what every is best for you really!

any cheap one will do?
will i be fine with bike ones?

Yes mate, i only have bike helmets and always use them on track days and the Ring with no issues.

For peace of mind just make sure that it still has the stickers on the back kite mark gold sticker etc etc :blabla:

any more info on what stickers ? i take it they are just like standards?

I have a motorbike one with the ACU gold sticker on the back. This is fine for all tracks except Silverstone; where apparently there are issues with using MSA approved ones only, i.e. one thats certified to be ok in motorsport crashes - bike helmets are only certified to be safe in a motorcycle crash, but in practical terms offer a comparable level of protection. I think after december 09 MSA helmets will have to be fireproof.

If youve got the money its worth splashing out on an expensive motorsport helmet. But a £100 motorcycle helmet will give your head good protection, you can get one with a cool paint job, and then just hire an open one for £10 if you do have any issues at silverstone. I use one of these KBC Helmets which i picked up from my local motorcycle store. :nice:

I use a Sparco Club open face, which wasn't too expensive (£90-ish), as it's a bit easier to speak to passengers with an open face helmet.

Cheers,
Alex

I have OMP FAST, looks great, cost ~70pounds in my country.

There is no problem of visibility...also good if you have very loud car :)

Best to check with the school, US rules will differ.

As for UK, most TD indemnity forms have regulations on helmets, like the demise of the suction cup for camera mounts, helmet regulations will soon be more enforced.

MSA Blue book states in section K...

10.3. ...criteria when buying or using a helmet:

(a) Correct standard.
(b) Correct fit.
(c) Security.
(d) Condition.

10.3.1. Standards. Helmets bearing one of the under mentioned “standards” may be approved by the MSA subject to other criteria being met.

imo its the price u put on ur head.
cheap wont save u in a big accident or a fire, a proper auto racing helmet will protect u more and if theres a fire.
i my self have a Bell GTX, i bought it when i 1st started out going to the circuit and still use it to this day in super lap.

even if your not going to go that far into the sport and just do small club sprints i think its still advisable to buy some thing a little more protective for your head.
