Sell & buy another one or re-shell?

Hi guys,

I've only had my 9 for 5 months but it is the first car I really don't want to sell and replace, in fact I want to keep it for good. The problem is that my 9, being on the cheaper side, isn't 100% perfect. There's nothing major wrong with it, but the bodywork is far from mint, the car has covered over 100 000 miles and there are a few wee dents and scratches and a couple rust spots under the bonnet. It doesn't bother me at the slightest now, because the car is my summer daily and I have to drive it regardless of weather, but in a year or two, I am going to put my 9 in the garage and only take it out when its nice and sunny and use some other car as my daily. I wouldn't want anything minter right now because it would tear my heart apart every time I would have to drive it in rain, so my car is perfect for me at the moment, but it is not a car worth keeping for the future.

So now I have basically 2 options:

1) Keep my car, drive it as it is for the next year or 2, sell it and add some savings on top and buy another - mint, low mileage one.

Now this would be obviously much easier solution and probably cheaper one too. On the other hand, buying another car is always risky - you can never be too sure if there's any hidden problem etc...

2) Keep my car, get an absolutely mint shell and start from scratch using my 9 as a donor. The advantage is that instead of saving money for a new one (I suck in saving, big time lol) I could just spend money bit by bit - rebuild engine, then gearbox, get new headlamps etc. And then finally get a new shell, underseal it, replace every bush on the suspension etc and over the course of one winter swap everything over. I like this idea better because it would somehow still be ''my'' 9 (I do get emotionally attached to cars lol) and what's even more important I would have total control of what has been done to the car. I'm just not too sure how much I would end up paying in the end.

BTW, if I get a shell that has not been registered yet - do I have to register it again? Or do you just notify DVLA that you chassis number has changed?
Another question - is there any difference between pre- and facelift shell? I'm not too keen on the facelift looks, but it is probably easier to get a mint facelift shell rather than mint pre-facelift? I know this has probably been asked million times, but I couldn't find a definite answer.

Just let me know what you think is better, what your experience is and anything else I should be aware of. Thanks guys!

ahh, dont pull apart my 1st ever ek9 :( lol

I know, but it would be too much hassle to sort this one out :( Unfortumately good quality full respray will be more expensive that a new shell....

booooo, haha yeah man i hear ya :D

i woulg go with the reshell idea, as you say it would be like your old 9, which is true in a way, and whats even better is you know your car, ie.. engine, gearbox, drives cv joints,, etc, etc, etc, what i mean is, what if you sell the car you have now, and buy another one,, and guess what it,s a ball of ****, engine ****ed,, gearbox half dead,, etc etc, you are just going to end up spending money you wouldnt have to if you did the reshell idea,,cos you know your car,,, thats just my opinion,, but i know what i would do,,,

id live with the dents- i do, at the end of the day its not a show car these cars were developed to be on track and that in my opion is what they should be used for, mite aswel get a vdub or sum euro shite with stupid camber if you want a show car, just gradually get the rough bits sorted dont be dragged in by what other members do and chuck loads of money into a re-sprey etc as you might aswel burn your money.

If you're going to take your car off the road for a winter why not just strip your car back to the shell and re spray it. When you rbuild it just use new bushes etc.

Small dents don't bother me but I can't stand seeing the patches of rust in my engine bay

Like the guys said above but instead respray it your self or get a mate to help you with it and then rebuild it. That way you will be even more attached to the car

Right. To do it propperly will cost alot of money and lots of time. I was in a very simular situation 2 years ago when i bought my DC2. Nothing majorly wrong with it but my god it was a munter. Took me 2 years to rebuild it propperly and it STILL isn't mint as i have spent money on quality parts over a long time rather than rushing it and buying cheaper parts. As Sarkel said, i cannot begin to tell you how much i love the dc2 now. It's my creation and i saved it from death to be used to show up M3s, TVRs and Porsches :). If you are prepared to work for it, it is worth it. Buying a minter is probs your best option but then again that isn't any fun and i know people who have bought minters and been affraid to mod them which is very very ghey!

Was it worth it?

If your planning to keep the car forever, then I would go with a complete re-build, and re-spray if you are only planning to use it on perfect weather days.

It might take you a year or so, but I think the reward would be worth the effort put into it, and at the end you would be left with a mint car.

I think that is what I would do.

Thanks for all the input guys, I am more & more leaning towards the re-shell idea. That is the ONLY way to get the car exactly the way I want it to be. Regarding re-spraying the shell I have now - that is not an option, not only because it would be expensive to do it, but treating any rust that is already present is always very tricky. I don't want to spend money on full respray just to find rust emerging a few years later. Having owned a classic Beetle I know what I'm talking about :D So my aim will be to get a spotless shell and swap everything over. Now lets just hope I can find one!

Strip the shell back to bare metal, treat the rust, then get the whole shell galvy dipped :nice:

Yeah, but how much would that cost? I can strip it back to bare metal, but then I would have to have it galvanized & re-sprayed... And because the car will ideally not see a raindrop again, let alone any salt, the ultimate rust protection is not going to be necessary, so I hope anyway. Clean shell is going to cost me what? £600ish? I don't think you can get a full re-spray for that, not considering all the work involved in stripping my present shell back to bare metal...

I have no idea, prob a fortune!

Would be ideal to do this is you had plenty of £ and you were gonna keep the car forever.
