heya guys. just a quick post to ask advice etc,
my 9 seems to be using alot of oil lately. checked my oil level the other week and there was hardly any oil on the dip stick. topped the oil up with about 2 litres of oil and kept an eye on it. when i checked it yesterday the oil level had dropped again to just above the first oil marker dot on the dip stick.

theres no visible signs of oil leaking at all.the oil warning has not come on at all.engine noise or performance hasnt changed etc.

just wondering if it could be something internal where the oil may be burning away. just wondering before i take a trip to a garage etc

check to see if your PCV valve is clogged.

does it puff blue in the morning when you first start the car...or when you downshift? That's usually a sign of leaky valve seals.

It's possible that the oil ring is worn out and the compression could still be good giving you good power.

the pcv valve is the valve at the rear of the inlet manifold ye? hadnt thought of checking that.

notice a small bit of smoking from the exhaust but not a great deal.nothing that worried me. not noticed anything at all when downshifting.

may get a compression test done soon as poss :(

what oil you using? some engines dont seem to like some types of oils,
check out the "which oil is recomonded for the b16b" sticky thread

The amount between the lower and the upper line on the dipstick is only 1 quart/liter. No reason to top up with 2 liters. How many miles between the loss of a liter of oil?

hard to tell to be honest as i hadnt checked it for a good few weeks etc.
planning on doing an oil change and keeping a note of how long it takes to burn some oil etc and go from there.

also take note if the oil turns dark quickly or not.

if it turns noticeably darker within 1000kms, it's a sign that the oil ring is not doing it's job and the combustion gases are mixing with the oil.

silly questions but you do always check you level when the engine has been left to cool for a while yeah? and when the car is on flat ground? supprising how much difference it can make to appearance of oil level on uneven ground.

motul 300v 5w 40 ftw or silkoline pro s is a good choice if driving hard.

my standard practice is checking at the petrol station.

shut off the car... pop the bonnet (woohoo..using English lingo) let it cool while I fill.

go pay, come back check oil - fill as required and leave... !
