Recently bought a block with crank, wanted the b18c crank to stroke my ek9.
Stripped the block to get the crank out and inspect, found the bearings look alittle beat up and that 2 of the main journals have a score that catches my finger nail.
So my question is what do I do? Take it to a machine shop and have material taken away or is the crank likely to be scrap?

Will post some pics as they upload.

The bearings show the damage much better than the cranks does. But basically the deep groove in the bearing is also on the crank, but not as deep I don't think.

They will polish out by a good machine shop. And new bearings . Type r dunk had his crank done on his little honda. And get it UV crack tested as well . Got a good shop nr me

Where abouts are you bigskank?
Not many recommended machine shops near me.

I have a similar issue with the crank I've got and all the local machine shops near to me are happy to sort it. They also give me the measurements so I can get the right size OEM bearings :)

Excellent.
Mind telling me how much you paid? Obviously I'm abit green to this sort of thing and don't want my pants pulled down over getting it sorted.

I've not had it done yet as I need to pull my finger out and finish getting my head stripped down :angry2:

I've been quoted by 3 different people though
£80 + vat
£90 + vat
and £108 + vat

last one was a big engineering company so more ££, I'd use word of mouth if poss and find someone :)

Nice, quite a cost then.
Suppose needs must though and nice to see progress being made.
Will get on the phone to afew local companies and see what they say.
B16b comes out next weekend!

I'm still weighing up just paying for someone to build it or attempt it myself. I feel confident, then I read something and decide it'll be a bad idea haha
You still cracking on with doing it yourself?

Yeah I'm still cracking on with it! If I'm not sure I'll ask about like I have with this crankshaft.
Can't afford for anyone else to build it lol

If you can wait till I've done mine, I'll build yours for you.
Although your probably better of doing it yourself lol

haha I may take you up on that!
The only thing making me questioning doing it is checking clearances etc.
I'm gunna assume the machine shop will check the crank after its reground and measured for bearings.
Then if its being overbored, they'll have measured to check its within tolerances as I'm giving them the pistons with the clearances when they do the block work.
Piston rings shouldnt be too hard...hopefully the rest can be done with feeler gauges and plastigauge lol

Wasn't sure if a rod bolt stretch gauge was 100% necessary for rods bolts? I've seen it mentioned in a few places, but wondering if you can build the engine safely without?lol

Not sure it's 100% necessary tbh.
My b series book doesn't mention using one either.

I learnt the clearance checks online, the processes are same for all engines but require fairly expensive tools to measure accurately, plasti-gauge can be abit hit and miss I've heard so I'll just pay the dollar for the tools and learn a new skill, over paying for someone else to do it.

Jesse, I am in Reading but the machine shop is In Bracknell 1 hour 30 from brands hatch
Classic modern engine services .
A few years back I had a bearing spun on my crackshaft had these guys look at it they found a hair line crack when UV tested . They told me not to use it for racing or track . Pick my engine bits up tomorrow :))

It's all go with the engine builds on ek9.org ATM, seems everyone is building an engine.

Hahaha yep I'm in that club too ;)

I have response to your crank problems as well. All the bearings in mine were ruined so I replaced them all. The crank had some minor scoring on so I had that polished out & job done :) Pictures aren't amazing but you get the jist!

Wow, would say yours are a fair bit worse than mine.
Although mine had only done 7k since it was rebuilt. That sort of bearing wear that quickly worries me alittle, hopefully just poor workmanship and not the crank at fault.

Haha yeah they were destroyed! My bottom end was in pretty bad shape when I got it tbh. Took a good bit of time & money to put it right.

Machine shop was happy to polish my crank up though so I'm sure you'll have no problem :)

My engine had done under 10k apparently... Highly doubt it judging by the condition of parts but still. It's right now :D
