rocker painting

has anyone done theres without using vht paint? as in use normal car paint? if its prepd and primed first will it be ok ?

I've done it, lasts for a wee while but does start cracking eventually :nono:

Dont media blast the cover, the b series rocker covers have a baffle plate inside and you can never get rid of the sand behind the baffle. Here is a few of mine.

Careful preparation is the key. VHT wrinkle stuff does not need any primer, mine was painted over a year ago and it still looks as good as new. A few things to point out if anyone will be using VHT crinkle paint - DO NOT apply more later if you miss a bit - the finish will not be the same! EVERYTHING must be done at the same time, there's no margin for error. In my case I missed a bit in the gap between the rocker and timing belt cover parts, so I thought I would just respray it later - a big mistake, I had to strip it down and start all over again! As for the writing - you can use a wee bit of grease on the writing and then just wipe the paint off, however I don't like that idea because the grease may get somewhere else and if you don't notice it you are buggered. I personally use dremel to take most of the paint off and then a very fine sandpaper on a block to polish it out.

top advice ^^,
i used a stanley blade and scraped the paint off the writing then a fibreglass pen to clean it up. still to do the rocker cover i have fitted now though.

Be very careful if you sand blast your rocker cover to make sure its well cleaned. not just for painting, don't really want bits of sand dropping into your engine.

Mine wouldn't fit in the oven either... Worked a treat even like this lol.

I've done a rocker cover before with normal paint. BUT I used a high temperature grey as a primer and also a high temperature lacquer as ut was a metallic colour and just to be extra safe. Looked good and looked just as good a. Year later when I sold it

Prepped, I did go over it with a wire brush attached to drill after this pic to be honest just to get all the darker bits shiny.

Just finished painting now (still wet and it is red wrinkle paint), mums kitchen floor is red :)

Bit gutted it too big for over, so I will let it dry and pop it back on car for curing like others have done

looks good ! but still dont get how people make these red and white jap rockers qand look unreal.

Have you seen the one on my s2000 thread? That was made by painting the cover white and putting a red sticker over the white paint then clear coating it all

I actually did mine with Hammerite Smooth White Aerosol.

Stripped it with paint stripper and sanded back any difficult to reach areas then built it up with layers from the can. No Primer just straight on there, came out pretty well Im sure there is a picture on my build thread. EDIT: Actually not as close up as I thought but you get the idea, I will be changing it again soon (http://www.ek9.org/forum/members-rides/17210-just-got-my-ek9-here-she.html) Page 6.

Been on the car over a year now and through plently of track days still no flaking, BUTTTTT its no longer white its kind of cream now :p and since its not lacquered its lost some its shine and dirt sticks to it.

ill check this out. dont fancy doing your one how to guide?? :)

haha could do if i had pics and what not.
if you want to send me a rocker cover i could probably knock one up for you?
basically i took the rising sun flag an dprinted different sizes and put the paper to match the covers shape.
then took the paper to a sticker shop and had them make the sticker. whilst i painted the cover in CW(best colour lol)
after paint had dryed i stuck the sticker on and painted over it with a good few layers of clear coat. jobs a gooden.

thanks for the offer mate probably be too much grief sending a rocker from ireland to the uk for what its worth. ill have a look at your thread now. cheers
