Hey lads I took off my cover last week and resprayed it looks lovely. Then I went and put it back on.Tightened up all the nuts and bolts.Took it for a spin around and when I came back, went to check if any oil was leaking and it was.It seems to be leaking all around the gasket.Any suggestions as to what the problem might be.

your rocker may have been taken off several times before... get a new gasket from honda. It should be fine once installed.

did you use silicone? your supposed to if your reusing a gasket...

Just give you guys a tip, if you use shop-tissue/roll, put a bit of fresh oil on there and clean the gasket by wiping along the edge of it all the way round (with cam cover upside down and gasket stil in there so you can aply pressure when wiping) AND the sparkplug grommets. Then get another clean piece of roll, splash some fresh oil onto it and wipe a thin film of oil all over the gasket and carefully place the came cover back onto the head.. lined up.. and use the base of your palm to tap it down firmly in all four corners. These leaks generally happen because of the gasket 'pinching' and not seating perfectly but you do this and leave it slightly lubed with regular engine oil it works fine every time, no need to change the gasket!

When you tighten it down, tighten the middle four nuts first then the outer four and again use engine oil to lube the studs/nuts (to overcome the friction that throws your torque-measurements out!), just a smidge is needed... then torque them down to 12Nm. :nice:

You wont have ANY leaking issues after that!

And the only place you should use the silicone gasket (IF the above doesnt stop any leak!, which is neigh on impossible is you follow the above instructions,, new gasket or old) is on the corners at the bottom of the cam-caps. Not the four corners of the head but the corners where the semi circle of the cam caps meet the head's horizontal mating aurface of the cam-cover gasket! (i.e. those 8 places).

Lube and wipe down then lube and install as instructed and you WONT have these leaks. Im telling you this from experience.:nice:

thats like what i do when fitting them but i use grease not oil works a treat never had any problems with sealing my cam cover.

Just after trying it but in the process i'm after snapping one of the 4 internal threaded bolts. Is my engine f##ked.

Ya the ones that the second nut holds down the spark plug cover.

dont worry about it mate this is why u should invest in a set of three torque wrenches, u need a small low rane one for the smaller bolts. the stud unbolts from the cam caps with a 12mm spanner. the studs coot about £2 each as i remember

Take the cam cover back off and order a new stud, the inner four are a diff length to the outer four.:nice:

Cheers this is the last time I'm going fiddling around my engine bay.I think I will leave it to the professionals the next time.

going by the manual you are meant to fit a new gasket, also use sealant only on the 4 curved sections that go round the camshafts, also make sure that you tighten the bolts evenly in stages to the correct torque :nice:

the manuals reccomendation is relevant to servicing. But You can tell if the gasket is perished/ in need of being replaced
