Hi guys,

Some of you might have seen my MG ZR rally car which I put a B16 engine into? Well here's a few recent shots to keep you updated. I had a slight mishap at a test session the other week and have done some engine damage - perhaps you guys may be able to help advise me?

Engine is a B16A block with Eagle rods and Wiseco 12.5:1 high comp pistons. Bottom end all balanced. Head is a stock B16B with Type R cams - stock springs etc. Head has been flowed. ARP throughout. Titan Motorsport throttle bodies. Big manifold with 2.5" straight through system. S300 ECU etc etc. The car made 170whp at 8800rpm - car absolutely flies and I have had top threes in all 3 events this year. Car is going well.

A couple of weekends ago though, I was doing a test day at Blyton. Changing from 3rd to 4th I hit the limiter (not unusual for a rally car) and then the engine lost all power and came to a stop. Compression substantially down and was backfiring through the inlet when spun over. Presume bent inlet valves at this stage but haven't yet taken head off. I presume valve float at high rpm due to stock valve springs?

Question is - are Type R valves the same as B16A ones as I have a spare head. Also, whilst taking the head off and putting a new head gasket on etc, I am obviously going to upgrade springs, retainers and also cams. Whilst being mapped the car showed great promise to make some really good power - limited by the valvetrain only being stock we think. Question is, considering it's intended use, what cams would people recommend? Pro 2's, Toda's, Crower? I would like to see 200whp out of it, and imo, I have everything else on the shopping list to make this power other than cams. My other question and concern was valve to piston clearance if I went for bigger cams. What is known to clear and what will I have problems with? The head had a decent skim when built also... I don't know the actual end compression ratio but It should be high.

Any advice would be great!

Since last posting progress pics, here's some photos after a full shell paint and rebuild. Tried to add a few snaps of the upgrades since the last update, too.

And here's the important bit - the engine bay.

Cheers guys!

I have had some people tell me my 8800rev limiter is brave on stock valve train but they may mean because I'm boosted.
What was your rev limiter?

Stock rev limiter is 8600 iirc and I doubt Honda would leave so little headroom if I'm honest, plenty people rev stock b16bs to 9k with no adverse effects. Type r valves are not the same, at least ones are slimmer and lighter I think inlet valves are lighter and exhaust are the same but someone needs to confirm this.
