I recently did a clutch job on my car and installed a 4-pad rigid disc and 1800lb pressure plate combo from clutch specialties, new pilot bearing and throughout bearing used and new 12lb XTD flywheel used all in a b16b gearbox.

Now when the car is idle and the gearbox is in neutral with the clutch pedal out i have a strange ratteling/grinding noise as if its a twin plate clutch and as soon as i press down the pedal the noise goes away! What can this be?

I lubed the pilot bearing, i put anti seize on the input shaft and cleaned and regreased the fork, this is not my first clutch job, is it the design of the clutch?

Sounds like it could be the clutch, seems like you have done everything correctly.

Did you torque up the flywheel and pressure plate bolts? I missed one once, it did not end well.

Also did you make sure the flywheel was mounted flat onto the crank before tightening? Can't see it being that really though.

Yeah, everything torqued properly, if the flywheel was not flat i think i would have some bad vibration in higher rpm? Car runs great, clutch feels great just the noise is so odd, i am thinking maybe this is normal for rigid disc?

mine does exacly rhe same like a grinding noise and when you press pedal down it stops it is wierd some people said it might of been my clutch going but reading this i dont think it is!! pm me when you find out what the problem is so i can have a look at mine because i think we have the same problem mate

what brand throwout/ release bearing did you use? how far do you need to push the pedal for the noise to stop?

If theres no vibration through the pedal in and out / rattling noise is constant and also holds torque its grand!:nice:

Its probably the springs or if its multi plate?? its the floating disc.. Its fine.

Will do!

Not sure mate, they were not boxed up :(

There are no springs, its a single disc 4-pad rigid, here is a pic i took before install:

That`s normal i think. Friend of mine had the exact same thing happen to him, and when he went back to the garage and complain they tolled him it`s normal. Now he`s done more 20000miles and all`s fine.

yeah ive done 3k with mine making that noise and its fine well i hope so lol
its when you push the pedal allll the way down then it stops making the noise for me dont know about blinx9900 though we shall see hopefully we shall get to the bottom of it :nice:

If the noise goes away when the clutch pedal is pressed its usually the release bearing.

is aftermarket clutch release bearings not usually renowned for there noisyness, few people ive talked to have said after fitting there clutches the realease bearing rattled a bit but isnt doing any harm.

Im not saying it is the release bearing for sure. Its just 99% of the cars we get into the garage with this sort of complaint is diagnosed as the release bearing so a new one is fitted and that fixes the problem. I cant speak for aftermarket bearings but i know that oem ones are meant to be quiet otherwise there would be no point in changing the release bearing for a new one if the customer complained about the noise. I dont see why an aftermarket one should be noisey anyway. Im not doubting you but are you 100% sure that all was fitted correctly? There is always the chance of new parts being faulty aswell.
