Hey everyone,

The other day, my car started to rattle really bad hearing it while driving. I pulled over while leaving the car running. Looked underneath the car and saw that my catalst coverter was making the noise. It was rattling like mad!

Also, before the rattling, there was a weird noise (sounded like metal) happening at 2,000revs for a quick 2seconds. Other forum's has told me it seems like a heatshield. Would this be the heatshield for the catalyst?

Drove it today and now it's stopped as well with the 2,000rev weird noise.

What should i do??

Does this mean I need to replace it?

on my 1.4 civic this happened and it was just a heat shield cover that just cracked at the weld just cut it off not much of use for them anyway!

@ devanecivic - Heat shield at the weld? Where is the weld located? (sorry, im a noob-ish) Did you have a metal rattling noise at certain revs?

It could be a heat shield that came off or you might have blown out your cat, this is somewhat common, catalytic converters get old, the honeycomb core on the inside collapses and starts to make a rattle noise and sometimes even brakes up and gets shot out the exhaust so the noise stops.

@ blinx9900 - What do you suggest I should do? Replace the cat? Without a fully working cat, would i loose bhp?

If the noise is gone just leave it, you will not lose any power, you may in fact gain a very minor amount...

@ Jokeshopbeard - A decat? Get rid of it? I don't really like a LOUD exhaust btw. Don't want the Police up my a** lol

@ blinx9900 - And what if the noise is still there? replace it with a sports cat or OEM cat?

its just like where its joined together just to keep the shield together i just took it off its not much of a use anyway.or it could be ur cat thats gone bring it to a gatage if ur unsure!

Get the car in the air, inspect the area first to see what it is, if its a heat shield then just remove or secure the piece thats making noise, if this is coming from INSIDE the cat then it is most likely the core has collapsed. If the core has collapsed then you can either leave it alone, buy an OEM cat to replace it, buy a sports cat, or a decat. If decat is too loud you can find resonated decat's that keep the noise down.
