Is STP ocatane booster any good?

its all a con, additives make your car lose power, 5th gear ran tests on the top branded ones, its all a waste of money. might be some vids of the test somewhere

higher octane fuels are useless unless you are using for racing/track use - the high compression engines of almost all modern road vehicles will work sufficiently and economically on standard unleaded fuel.

I went to a refining course as part of work two weeks ago and the chemical engineer there was saying that on a Ferrari with 450bhp, using high octane fuel will only increase BHP by about 3, which is hardly noticeably on a 450bhp engine.

It's not really going to add much power wise if you're using it for road driving. Racing teams have their own blend of fuel which ignites runs at higher compressions.

It is also useless to use higher octane fuel than your car's recommended fuel type as you're car's not mapped to use it and the mechanical parts would need to be alter to make full use of higher octane fuels.

But surely it would make a noticable difference on an ek9 which is mapped to run 98 + and it's only running 91??? my car mapped for 98+ if i even put 95ron in my mpg drops wayyyy below half of what it usually is! and it does feel as if it is a little more sluggish

^yes, in answer to your question, your ek9 is mapped to run 98+, it'll probs work best at 98/99 - you'll find it hard to get 100 octane plus from retailers anyways

those are manufactured specifically in batches rather than when we refine crude into normal "gasoline"

but like said above, these off the shelf additives aren't really good for your car - its just a premium product that the oil companies make a higher margin from as the prices for unleaded/diesel are set by the market

the octane booster whatever it may be, will not be jet fuel (kerosene), that's far more volatile, more expensive to refine but gathers a higher premium, so its unlikely to be used in internal combustion engines (plus, the temperature/pressure jet fuels ignites at can't be reach by a car engines)

Having talked to the chemical engineer who's been working with fuel for over 30 years, the oil companies who refine the crude get the best possible combination of gasoline blend for car usage and spend billions of dollars on it to achieve, these off the shelf additives are nothing but a money making scam.

If someone uses these and finds it helps, then more often than not, its in their head because they feel that is what should happen and not something that's actually happening.

Best thing for your engine performance (bar mods), is to change your lubricating oil regularly and use a good quality one (Mobile 1 10w40 Semi Synthetic is recommended for EK Honda's IIRC), get your spark plugs changed and use the correct fuel grade that your car uses.

If you can't get higher than 91 octane, then stick to that, the additives won't do anything for you
