Just a quick question. A mate of mine bought an EK9, however is having doubts that it has a B16A2. The engine codes have been ground off and stamped with a breakers stamp (dont shoot the messenger, i didnt buy the car). Its got the bolt on Type R parts, rocker cover etc... But is there any other way of finding out if it is a B16B, e.g cylinder head number stamps???

Regards

Is he sure the rest of the car is an EK9? Or is it just the engine he's unsure of?

I know theres differences in the engine but other than the stamp im unsure how to tell by looking at it.

I'm sure someone will know...

take the head off and look at the pistons, the EK9 uses the funny shape high compression pistons

or easier you could take the rocker cover off and have a look at the valvetrain, B16B uses dual valvesprings which i'm guessing you should be able to make out, easier than the above as saves taking the head off!!!

if it's a b16a2 the chances are that the gearbox has been changed too?! have a look at the barcode on the gearbox, should start S4C and have LSD in big black letters on it

Does it scream its bonnet off when you hit 6000 ? what ecu is in it ? what does it redline at ?

look at the vin plate on the chassis, what does it say? EK4 or EK9? does it look blue or looks like its been tampered with? also if its a EK4 dressed up as a EK9, the EK4's have four studs and the Ek9's have 5 studs on the hubs.

yeah what rich777 said. a b16a2 changes cam at 5500 a b16b changes at 6000,

civic sport, hes asking if the engine is a b16b not if the body is an ek9

Cheers for the responses. He works away most of the time so thats the reason we haven't had the rocker cover off. I was going to put a flexable microscope down the spark plug hole, but he's never home. I was just wondering if there was any external differences, so he could determin the engine.

Ill check the vtec start point then.
Cheers the responses

look at the back axel the ek9 has anti roll (sway)bars think thats what there called

I hope your not going to go to the extent to pull off the head just to check the pistons... unless you can afford the labor and resealing...

-Look at the IM, it is bigger than the 16a and theres a mark underneath that should imprint PRC.
-Head is marked PRC-3
-Block should have B16B and another 7 digits that should match your ek9 firewall as well as the BLUE EK9 chassis plate.
-Tranny starts with S4C (but 16a also same)
-Sway bars at front is very thick, rear is 22m. EK4 would have thinner sway bars.

The sump is larger on a Type R, check the date stamps on the front of the head, how agressive is VTEC.

I think you will find that the b16a also has dual valve springs

We've come to the conclusion that its a B16A. I got a mate down with anouther civic(standard) to compare. It left it for dead. Also the clutch went about 2 weeks earlier, and when replacing and inspecting, theres no LSD. Both the gearbox and the engine codes were ground off. When he confrunted the guy who sold it (japanese), he said he could get on a plane back home the next day. So a warning for you, there are con artists out there.

Beets me why anyone would buy a car with the numbers ground off in the first place:angry2:, then your mate was surprised when the seller said "get lost". What did he expect the dodgy seller would say :D.
Just out of interest how cheap was the car?
I have got a B16B if your mate wants to make it a true Type R again:nice:

Easiest way is pull off the oil pan and windage tray to see if you have the crank girdle, B16a does not have the crank girdle, you should also be able the see the tranny stiffner.

So a warning for you, there are con artists out there.
I thought everybody knew this, there is a reason i refer everybody on here to Dunk, cause i know he is legit! I'm guessing your mate is a bit younger?
