Head unit removal

Having serious hassle replacing the headunit on my 99 facelift. I've got all the lower dash off and the centre panel free'd but I've come to a halt.

The cable attaching the heater controls to the loom on the bulkhead is the culprit. It's not long enough for me to be able to release the plug connectors at the panel end and the large blue plug on the bulkhead end of the loom doesn't want to release.

Am I missing something? Any advice would be helpful.

right, push the centre console back in place if you have tried to take it out. then you'll need to lay on your back in the footwell and unplug the harnesses from underneath the centre console, cant remember how many. then pull out the centre console from the passangers side (this is held in with 4 bolts/screws on the underside as well). you should then be able to unclip the blue plug by depressing the little snib on the underside of it and pulling it away. and hay presto you have the entire centre console in your lap! now its just a few more screws to remove the headunit.

Another tip is to use a flat head screwdriver to press in the little snib on the plugs. It will pull the plug out of the connector at the same time making it a lot easier to do than using your fingers.

I gave up in the end and put the dash back together. I couldn't see/feel a release tab on the bottom of the blue connector. There was one positioned centrally on the face you can see when looking directly at it in situ. This is the pale blue and white plastic plug about 1cm thick and 3-3.5cm tall. I couldn't see or feel a way to release it from the bulkhead to get a better grip nor did it want to seperate when pulling apart and pressing in the central tab. Not being sure I didn't want to apply too much force for fear of breaking the plug connectors. In hindsight I should have taken some pictures when I had the panel off.

The connector I'm having issues with is on here.

above step 12 left hand picture although I could not see a brown plug only the pale blue and white one. If that's clipped to the bulkhead with a platic clip and only needs pulling towards you to unclip it then I should be able to separate it but in situ I simply can't get a decent enough grip to split it. Hope that makes sense.

yea they're awkward, but just make sure you've got the wee clip in and give it a good tug and it will come loose! :))
