Gearbox rebuild problem

I'm having some issues with the rebuild of my y21 box. I have fitted a gear-x kit and m-factory carbon syncros. I've built the main shaft up and all seems good. On the counter shaft I'm having problems. When I seat the top 2 bearing first and second gear tighten up and dont spin freely when syncro is in neutral position. The first and second gears have not changed the only thing changed is the brass syncro rings. Should the first and second gears spin freely when cluster is built?

they should spin smoothly yes

be worth checking that you've assembled the 1-2 synchro hub and sleeve correctly as there are 2 dampeners which you need to have the correct way round, also worth dissassembling to check you haven't forgotten any of the washers / needle bearings (washer under 1st gear, 2 piece needle bearing in the middle of 1st gear, small sleeve and needle bearing in 2nd gear), pretty much can't go wrong when assembling the rest of the shaft as 3/4/5 are splined, then there are the 2 bearings (have to be fitted the correct way round for both, lower one is stepped and the top bearing has the slot at the top for the retaining clip in the casing) then finally a washer on top of it all

Gimme a shout if you need a hand, i'm in Aberdeen and built 3 B-series boxes now

I also have spare genuine honda 1st and 2nd gear synchros, comes as a full kit and i only needed the hub/sleeve

Yeah thought they should spin. Sounds like I've got the syncro gear the wrong way round. Hopefully that's what it is. If I'm still stuck I'll give you a shout.

ok im back at the gearbox tonite. i did have the syncro the right way round. it looks like the second gear on the counter shaft does not spin freely as 2 of the brass syncros lock into each other with a three lug tpye design. i am correct. im away to build up old stack and see how it works.
