Diff noises

When on full lock I get a fairly loud 'humming' noise coming from what I can only guess is the diff. It only does it when lock is applied and tone changes with speed. I've had an EK9 before and don't recall that one making noises like this.

I'm not sure if it's uprated because it bites fairly fiercely but it's difficult to tell without taking stuff apart.

Does anybody else experience noises on full lock?

:nice:

honda MTF 3 for the gearbox oil

humming could mean it's a quaiffe or similar uprated helical diff - plate type ones clunk

Thanks Steven. I'm intrigued as to what it is now so will change the oil to see if it goes away.

Are there any better alternatives to the Honda oil?

Would a worn diff make odd noises or just not lock? My Silvia has a helical type diff and when they wear they are silent but don't lock..

noise on full lock could also be coming from your P/S pump as well. check P/S fluif in the resorvoir and inspect for any leaks. happened to me and i know. In case you can hear the noise with car stationary 90% you`re hearing your P/S pump.

Thank you for your post :) It's not the power steering pump though as it only does it when moving forwards. Turning the wheel on the spot is silent and smooth, even on full lock. The noise is speed related too so has got to be the diff as it's silent when going in a straight line.

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like this really. I'll possibly have the engine out soon to 'tweek' it, so will have a look what diff it is then. In the meantime I'll change the oil to see if it makes a difference.

I'll post any updates here for other peoples future reference.

Mine hums and sometimes the odd click.

It's a Cusco LSD

i see. wheel bearing for sure.

I'm fairly certain it's not wheel bearing either or it would do it all of the time. It does it in both directions - left and right lock and noise tone related to speed and steering angle.

Thank you for the link. No, it's not like that, just a gentle hum but fairly loud. I'll take a vid later and upload it to here.

could be uprated diff, ive a mfactory plated diff and on full lock ud think somethings broke its that noisy i gets some odd looks haha

I have had a good look at the gearbox casing and it doesn't look like it's been apart in the past.

However, I have changed the gearbox oil for MTF3 which has significantly reduced the amount of noise, to a point where I'd say it's now un-noticable.

Agreed, front wheel bearings only make noise when turning, mines did the exact same thing

Is it whilst turning one direction more than the other? No helical diff should make that noise and plated will make a very obvious clunk

Well, unless changing the gearbox oil somehow fixed a worn wheel bearing..

Nah, seriously though, it wasn't the wheel bearing. I did check them and changing the box oil has sorted it now. Very glad of the cheap fix!

Cheers!
