Cooling fan intermittently not working.

Checked the relay and plugged it into battery it definatley not the motor or relay.
Would it be some sort of sensor? just doesnt seem to be kicking on when it should be. never had a problem with it in the past.
 
Yeah I know but like the other day it wouldn't come on at all and nearly overheated evaporated and burned off a lot of water in the rad.
Then next day kicked in just fine as it normally does.
Then today fan again doesn't kick in when it should while idling at lights.
 
The coolant temp sensor would be my next stop.
 
If the coolant is steaming/boiling it wouldnt be head gasket leak would it?
 
Fan wont come on at all unless its hardwired now.
Just really paranoid its not headgasket after all the googlin ive done on the matter everyone seems to think it would be headgasket leak and for most people it turned out to be that.

fan switch.
 
Otherwise known as the ECT sensor. Really simple to replace, it's next to the thermostat.... just have to drain the fluids. If you've got a workshop manual you can test the cabling is all ok, but I suspect it's the sensor.
 
I assume i have the same problem then, new thermostat and fluids. Thermostat is opening and coolant is circulating however fan will not come on unless i short out the plug beside the thermostat or i give direct power from the battery, does this mean its the fan switch that's my problem???

hum, may just buy a new one. gives me an excuse to get some parts off ricky! lol
