Clio 172 - opinions

Sign up to ClioSport you probably wont leave though, it's a good forum! I haven't had a clio for over a year now and I still use it daily. Some funny guys on there, you will also get worshiped for a nice ek9 ;) hah

what about a 306 gti-6 ?? quick cars and ( from my own dturbo ha ) very fun cars to drive :)

Just changed my EK9 for a Clio 182, loving it so far :) Probably about the same to 60 but a lot more torque in the Renault, plus xenons, climate control, cruise control, auto wipers, 6 cd changer etc. It's on 30mm Apex springs so handles nicely, I saw 40mpg last week too on my commute.

Edit: I still want a DC5 later :p

I find them lacking in speed sensation (not saying they're slow). But I like the fact that they're so light, around 1000kg. Lighter than even a VTI :)

Renault Sport car's are really good, regarded as the best hot hatches in recent times. If you get one you wont be disappointed. :)

I've owned a couple. Bit of a Renaultsport fan and still have a V6.

Compared with the HONDA, it's a bit more refined (With plastic of course) It's quiet and comfy. Horrific driving position, but compared to the recaro's that understandbale. Handling wise, very capable, tuning wise, huge options but 200 is the limit without forced induction. Servicing is cheap with a number of Indi's now on the market. No need to go for renno.

Problems:

Sensors onto the Plenum,
Drive shafts
Circlips onto the box
Air bag sensor under the seats
Exhausts are made of chocolate
Engine mounts go soft and the manifold touches the subframe
Shockers burst

With an aging car like the 172, you're going to get wear and tear issues. My first one sold at 35k and the second i bought as a gap car with 53k on the clock for a few months.

They are great wee cars overall. check out cliosport.net "mostly" helpful and a bit community.

Pics of both mine.

Hiya mate, iv'e just sold my Clio 182 Cup, not much diff from the 172 really, had it for about a year, and i loved it.. had no problems with it what so ever and it had quite a hard life! It goes well, and are easy too maintain too be honest.
Although it's gone and i'm sorting myself with a 9... i would deffinately have one again.
For the money you can't really go wrong!

Hi, the clio's are good cars but they arnt as easy to work on as an EK and the interior on the 172 cup is pretty horrid, on another note for that money you could get a pug 206 gti 180 which are just as fun and fast but with alot better interiors.

I was using a 172 for a week, really liked it, although the interior felt really cheap, but thats to be expected. And the pedals seemed slightly off center and too close together ?!

For the sort of money they go for I think they are great cars and felt faster than my 9 round the twisties

I'd buy one :p

This thread is a bit disappointing for me because i was buying a ek9 over a 172 cup for the performance but from what i have herd on here the 172 is a quicker cheaper car or have i got the wrong end of this?

Some people are saying its a quick as their ek some are saying it corners better, and from research i have done i can get a 172 cup for 3k less than an ek9 with less mileage and a newer car, also parts are cheaper. I'm hoping someone can tell me a few reasons why an EK9 is better? And not the "its french excuse".

Sorry for jacking the thread.

ek9 is a better car in general. seam welded, double wishbone, limited slip dif etc. and in the right hands is a weapon. if you had a race with a clio on a track the ek9 will definielty be the faster car IN THE RIGHT HANDS. depends on the driver.

clio is a very good car though but the ek9 has it right in the right areas. plus is more rare and cooler.

how many clio 172/ 182 do you see driving around? loads well where i live.

plus id say the clio cant corner as quick as the 9 mainly because of the suspension of the ek9 and limited slip dif

Mmmmmm guess im going to have to test drive one then, i do like the exclusivity of the EK9 and vtec noise is pretty awsome.

I have no doubt in my mind the Clio will be slower and handle worse than my EK9, it also wont be as much fun to own or as reliable. BUT, i sold my EK9 for £6200 and it was a R Reg on 80,000 miles(ish)

your getting a car thats 6 years newer for half the price of the EK9, and the Clio is a brilliant car, quick, torquey and fun. its the only replacement i can find for the Ek9 for less than £3500. maybe somewhat less reliable due to it being french but thats part and parcel of the car.

Cheers for the input everyone, i still havent found one thatd id be happy to buy yet, I seem to have become VERY fussy with what car i wnt after the civic :(

dunsy the clio is a good choice. The ones i drove have been as quick as a stock ek9's so they are not exactly slow and also they handle really well. plus they can be made to look nice too. i would go for the 172 cup as its more track orientated being lighter and lacking certain refinments. however if you wanted more toys such as xenons, leather seats, auto lights and auto wipers etc then go for the 172ff.

my old rep...

The driver's position in them is ****. Feels like i am driving my PUG 306. Not a fan of them...UKDM tegs go for that much nowadays...

Problem with UKDM Teg's is they're old cars now.

Agree with you on the Clio driving position though, it's not great - getting used to it, though.
