Cams, compression, revs and power...

i wish i could add to the knowledge being given here, but sadly i can't. I am loving sitting back and reading it though.....slowly ;)

However, I do look at alot of dyno graphs and i have a kind of photographic memory so to speak, but there are so many strange dips in graphs that i see that sometimes i play out in my mind how it would feel to drive that car, when in mine, with those dips and peaks all about the graph..
what i am getting at slowly, lol, is the graph you placed up looks so smooth and flat and consistent like it'd be such a free flowing, predictable, enjoyable engine to drive, basically thanks for giving me an insight into why i notice this..

enjoying this info muchly guys please continue .. is this a Sticky yet ?

rep added to you both. :dance:

Thanks bud! As Kozy said, theres no solid proof, but it hasn't been proven wrong on our engines either.

Random dips in power bands is very bad mate. Those who have plugged a Generic ECU into their cars before like for example, SPOON ecu. You would notice this huge stall in acceleration between 5000-6200 rpms. Its like someone disengaged the clutch whilst your in Full Throttle. Then suddenly your car starts accelerating again from 6200rpm.

I'm fortunate enough to have plugged 1 into my stock DC2R and EK9 as well as a Js racing one in my EK9. The power dip was actually caused by the lowering of the vtec point. Big cam lobes don't make power at low rpms. And most people tend to generally perceive these things;

-Generic branded ECU will make my car go faster because its made by SPOON and I paid lots of $$$ for it - FALSE
-Generic ECU lowers my vtec point to 4500rpm and increases the limiter to 9200rpm, means my car will go faster with that extra powerband! - FALSE

All of these ECUs are absolute rubbish! Whether your car is stock or lightly modded, they are just way off and the stock ECU actually makes more power overall.

The graph I placed up is from my current setup on my EK9. The engine feels like it has a very long powerband from 5800(vtec point) that keeps going on till the 9500rpm limiter. It seems to have another surge of power as it revs even quicker from 8000rpms onto 9500rpm. But it doesnt show how on the graph so not sure why it does that in real life.

My previous tune and setup prior to this about 1 year ago saw the peak power at 8400 and drop off till 9000rpm. I'm very happy with the results atm. The stock B16B head has plenty of flow from the factory for 1.6, and it doesnt look like the cylinder head is restricted. Most likely the cams ran out of puff since theyre only stage 1s. Lots of little and expensive mods to get it up there for a stock motor.

One day I'll post a video on how it runs if I can find a safe road and not risk loosing my license and car lol. All I can say is, its very lively up top. :nice:
