i took a chance on a cheap b18c4 engine today ,got it up the road and stripped it down to the block and head...i was told the engine runs but is smokey, turned it over by the crank bolt and when it comes to compression if you hold it without turning it over i can here a noise like air escaping coming from the head area, also the pressure getting held on the ratchet from the compression drops...

now im gathering its not in a good way but what is most likely the problem,i suspect either badly worn valve guides or bent valves/valves not seating properly...i just want an idea before i remove the head :(

you may hear some air escaping due to poorly seated valves etc or other small wear, but could be ok.if its only a small amount you may be fine.get a leakdown test before you go mad stripping it you are bound to lose a bit on an old engine
