Hi I recently bought a B16B engine. I am no expert with these engines so was wondering if anyone knows what the markings on the inside of the head are, looks to me like someone has been grinding away with a dremel, also there was a number in black pen on the head when looking through the oil cap.

That's all normal buddy.

I'm not sure what the 56 is about as none of mine have had that.

But the markings are standard? I race in the civic cup and engine has to be standard so want to make sure I'm not going against the regs thanks, Dave

The grinding is standard to my knowledge yes.
I'm assuming it's just the excess metal taken away from the casting process.
Just done a pretty poor job of it lol

Pretty poor lol I could of done better myself with a hand file and I aint no engine builder.... I thought these engines were meant to be the flagship of Hondas engines for the b16s hand built heads I thought?? Looks like a monkey built that in his shed whilst high on something. In all seriousness was yours this rough? It looks to me like the grind marks are too fresh in colour and too rough to be done by manufacturer 16 years ago!

Yeah mine where like that.
I remember the b16b head the most as that was the first one I noticed it on, haven't really paid attention to the markings since on other heads.
I don't remember any deep gouging but the grinding back was definitely there.

Fair enough cheers for the reply mate appreciate your thoughts. If anyone else also had this please let me know.

The grind marks are normal,
It's just where loose bits from the casting are removed prior to proper machining,
some are slightly rougher than others, but it has nothing to do with performance or them being hand built in anyway,

The so called "special" type R grinding is in the ports not around the valve train

As said its 100% normal and you will see this on most B-series heads after the factory dressing of the casting
