I have adjusted the valve clearances on my car today as they were getting a bit noisy. However once completed the engine did not run properly again and still will not. It will start but is very very lumpy and if i try to speed up the idle it dies. I have checked the clearances 3 times! I have done them to .15mm inlet and .17mm exhaust. It ran perfectly before this. Anyone with any ideas?:((

i've tried the bigger tolerance too and still no change. I've checked the ICV too. No good still :-(

Dizzy then? But then again your rev meter would have shown early signs of the dizzy beeing ready to go...

Hmmm before the clearances the idle was ever so slightly fluctuating on idle and when throttle was depressed gently revs would momentarily drop before increasing. I can't understand why its done this straight after the clearances were done though . . . . . . thank you for your inputs though guys, this car has really given me a headache today!

even if you didnt adjust them correct the car would still run ok. check all the sensors you have maybe knocked one.

i have checked all of them and even had the idle vacuum valve out for inspection and cleaning. I will double check again tomorrow though, thank you. Oh when i removed the spark plugs after the engine running so lumpy they were completely black indicating over enrichment or combustion not occuring properly. What could have changed from just a simple valve clearance adjustment? its literally; leads off, plugs out, rocker cover off :-S

just a thought, check all vacuum lines in the engine bay. its easy to knock one or pull one off and not even know it. just take a couple min's to look around, follow all hoses and ensure they are good.

Ok i'll check the vacuum lines again to ensure they are all ok. Yes the engine was stone cold when i carried out the work. Thanks

stop everything. dont start messing with things that dont need messing with.
if it was running ok before you messed with the valves then theres your problem, are you sure there on the lowest point before you try and gap them.
adam

did you remove the HT leads completely off the car or did you leave them attached to the dizzy? if you removed them completely there is a chance you could of mixed them up when putting back on the dizzy cap.

Yep these threads are pointless unless you let everyone know what the problems was etc

One bank of inlets was a little too tight on the clearance, must have moved or something. causing chuff back on the comp stroke!
