Hi Folks,

Was looking at purchasing an Accord Type R to use as a daily driver, just wondering if anyone on here has had any experience with one or owned one, any known faults etc. What sort of mpg would they do with sensible driving alot of time over back roads (this probably wont happen lol).

I know of the 5th gear and reverse syncro issues that can occur with the gearboxes.

Any info would be appreciated

Thanks

Nick

x2, my mate is thinking of buying one and would like an owners opinion, wee buyers guide etc :nice:

Well I Drive a Accord Euro R which is fairly similar. Im getting about 30 MPG average, With motorway trips it is very good on fuel. The 5th gear is the main problem but Parts are easy got in honda, cheapish and a easy job to do for most mechanics. The front engine mount breaks on them all, Again honda sell for approx £60. As its a Uk honda the usual rust checks etc.

Cheers for the input,

Have gone onto the Accord forum and main things seem like:

5th gear syncro
o2 sensors need cleaning every so often
EGR valve need cleaning every so often aswell as can choke up
Usual rust etc
All other general aspects when buying used cars

cambelt and they have some tensioner that needs doing too!

they are solid cars though, i had a 2002 model one. once they are going they are very quick, very heavy on petrol though!

Why not try getting hold of a JDM EK3? No it's not as fast as an ATR, but it probably does get you 1,5 times as far on a litre of petrol plus it's not slow either with 130hp on around 1000kg. I have a DC2 but am very happy with my Euro EK3 daily with super mileage :D

I could soon be in the market for an ATR, to drive they really are something special, much nicer than an EK4 and even an EK9, the whole car shrinks around you and goes like a rocketship. Downsides are the problems mentioned above but as long as you get one that has been looked after then you will be fine. MPG wise expect around 30 on a motorway cruise but if you hammer along you can expect around 15-20mpg, they do like a drink if you enjoy vtec.

Other bonus is with nice wheels, coilvers they really have that touring car look which is very very awesome. The other thing is they are seriously comfy cars on long journeys as well. Get over to Accordr.org as they are a nice helpful bunch over there, plus the fact it's a goldmine of ATR info.

Thanks for the further info. It seems there not the cheapest to run but you don't really buy anything with a Type R badge for that, on the plus side very good reliable cars and quick when they need to be. Purchasing one of these is on the shelf at the moment as im concentrating on getting an EK9 first.

they're good on fuel matey martin on here has a track one and he still gets good consumption even on track :0

I have one as a track car. Fuel economy can be reasonable. Mine is quite good as the car only weighs 1100kg. The 5th gear synchro is only an issue on the earlier cars. As a previous dc2 and ek9 owner i am very impressed with the accord as an overall package. It definately has that touring car look when lowered.

Check out accordr.org. they are a very welcoming and informative group of people.

Just out of curiosity what mods does your track ATR have? Don't see many tracked up ATR's around, last one I saw was at Silverstone classic 2009 and that was an ex-Honda BTCC car. :nice:
