The problems you describe can happen in any gearbox really if not looked after correctly so to say the s80 is worse than another model b series box isn't really true. Worn synchro's are common especially if the box has seen high mileage.

what would be the cause?? would it be worth trying it with fresh gearbox oil????

description i had whe i bought it:

"here we have an integra type r, 96 spec gearbox for sale. it needs attention, more than usual amount of backlash/ware hence the low starting price. it changes gear smoothly with no synchro issues.
i bought this as part of a swap package a couple of years ago to fit in my eg civic and over the past year or so a clonking noise appeared when changing into reverse and the gearbox engaging again after lifting off the clutch. by the end you could also here the same noise when engine braking in low gear and then putting your foot once more on the throttle. this is very unusual for a honda gearbox as they are usually bombproof, so the only thing i can guess is that there was a fault in the box from the start as it has not been hammered in any way!
i was planning to send the box of to be fixed before it became any worse but found a replacement cheaply so had it fitted as i need my car for work and cant be without transport for long. so now i am selling the original gearbox.
i have tried to be as honest as i can. any questions, just ask."

delivery within the uk only or can be picked up if preferred

Ive noticed your selling this box on civicjordan.co.uk?.
Don't you think you should mention these problems on your for sale thread?.

I hope if you are selling this gearbox that you inform potential buyers of it's condition. Hard to point the finger at cause without seeing the gearbox opened up. At a guess it sounds like the shift fork assemble is causing some trouble but excessive engine braking caused from the gearbox could point at shot bearings or mainshaft and countershaft not mating correctly again there is no way of knowing this for certain without opening the box up
