Hi,

I have a civic ej9 1.4i, and just wanted to find out when the car is cold with temperatures in the mornings or evenings being 0-2 degrees celsius in London, shifting from 1st gear to 2nd can feel a bit sticky/rough, but it does go in to gear but you just feel a bit of crunchyness.

After driving for 4-5 miles this problem goes away and it's back to being smooth again. Is this normal? Is any damage being caused?

Thanks

just the oil is thicker when cold and makes it bit less smooth and perhaps slight synchro wear.

so what is the solution to it? or anything in particular i should do before starting of?

i always warm my car up before driving you may find this helps.also ensure you have correct oil in gearbox.other than that i wouldnt worry too much.

oh rightt, thanks for the advice and warming up the car does tend to help, is there any particular gearbox oil you would reccommend? best brand for my ej9 1.4 2000 W Reg?

Thanks

Correct me if I'm wrong, but by warming up (generally done by leaving the car idle for around 5mins.) only the engine oil warms up not the tranny fluid.

i have the same problem with my car after starting to drive it. it gets stuck trying into first gear some time i have to push it hard and theres a slight crunch and sometimes going into second gear aswell.

The whole powertrain warms up because they are connected. Not to the same temp obviously, but the tranny fluid gets warm.

Yep i feel this in my ej9, It feels a bit more stiff going into second when it's cold, but yes as you said, after a while it's okay.

It doesn't bother me, makes no alarming noises etc...

My old 1.4 EJ9 did the same but to be honest it done 75,000K on the same trans fluid  and never crunched even after 135,000 apart from when my Mrs drove the car once lol.

The 1.4 EJ9 gearbox is solid i used to change gear alot at high revs and it never missed a beat. Thankyou Honda.

so whats the sollution to this guys?? if any lol, do ek9's and the vti's do the same?
