Loads of B20 Information

warning idiot question

Is it worth getting hold of a B20 block for my EK9? going to be taking apart a B16B and rebuildingish it for my EK9 and like the idea of more torque but is it that much of a massive difference on the B16B? just while the engine is apart was wondering

Don't want to build it up hugely just replacing it with standard parts were I can and doing the necessary mods for oil ect.

Seen a bit about it (brill write up BTW) and like the look off it but if i'm doing it to as standard spec as possible is it worth me just sticking with the B16?

Thanks :)

Hi Josh.

I'm in the process of getting an EK9 that's coming with a B20 fitted. It will have a B20B3 block and Integra (ITR) head, looking around 200 bhp. There will be more powerful cars out there but it's the torque you're getting from the conversion that's important.

There will be die hards that say this doesn't matter but it does. I'm not slagging off the VTEC engine here as the B series is a wonderful engine, it really is. I currently drive a CRX VTEC 1.6 which has the B16A1 engine, it's done a few miles, coming up to 196k and is nearly 21 years old but it still goes fantastically well but I do miss the extra power I'm not going to lie.

Mine should be running 150 bhp but because it's old it's probably a lot less than that now. I had a blast against an EK9 a few years back on the dual carriageway towards Chester and the EK was a lot quicker than mine, you could see the difference in the 30 odd brake between the two engines.

Imagine having that sort of power but without having to ring the neck out of it and with more torque you'd breeze past cars effortlessly. Don't get me wrong I love hammering the CRX, it makes a wonderful noise but with a B20 you don't have to do that everywhere you go but the good thing is, if tuned properly it is still capable of being nailed, it's just a bit quicker and nicer to drive. Many people say the B20 is as quick in 4th/5th as a VT is in 3rd.

A lot of CRX lads on CRX UK believe that most performance Honda's should have come with the B20 as standard, it's that good a conversion. There will be people who disagree who enjoy revving their cars who prefer the B18 or still the B16 I don't disagree with them it's each to their own but think of the low down power and the ability to still rev high and that's what you will be getting from a B20.

BTW it's a myth that the B20 can't handle the power and blows up. Make sure you take it to somewhere reliable. Daz at DNR/Endless Horizon is very good, probably the best around when it comes to the B20 - I'm getting mine off Daz it's one of his own cars and he has a great reputation with this build. There's a guy called Romain who tunes or used to tune Honda's who is supposed to be very good but I'm not sure if he's still about, seem to be a lot of companies in Ireland who do the conversion so may be worth looking there too.

HTH buddy!

Thanks alot for all the info and opinion there however my decision is swaying between B18 and B20 iv now gone off the idea of just sticking to my B16 while im there.

I'm just concerned about reliability I know tuned right people say they last longer but it still worrys me, and trying to get hold of a decent low millage B18 that hasent been trashed.

Think I'm leaning more towards the B18 right now and don't want to feel this thread with more info of the B18 so wont ask lol

Thanks for your help :nice:

Great info on thread thanks alot

No probs bud you're welcome.

Good luck with whatever engine you decide to go for I'm sure you will have fun with it either way! :drive:

Nice build planning to do b20z vtec build in the near future just hoping everything goes smooth. :)

NEED SOME ADVISE
Im building a b20 using a B16 head and im looking for the best set up for a reasonable budget.

is it worth buying duel valve springs and h/c valves. Also what management, I've been told to go for a p28 or a p30
