Just wondering what people think? My first impressions weren't very good... a friend was DJ'ing last night with all the software running off his laptop and windows 7 decided it wanted to update itself and restart in the middle of a set. I did have to laugh very hard, just thought id share it with you guys... here are some pics

Not surpised, I work with Window & Unix all day and wouldn't touch 7 with a bargepole. Vista was a pile of shite too. XP/server 2003 is the only half decent OS I've seen come from the microsoft stabe, and even that aint great.

If you want stable, go with the likes of Ubuntu (linux based). I think you'd be pleasantly surprised...

You thought it wern't very good just because it tried to update itself? That is turned on by default. My first impression from windows 7 is that it seemed more stable than windows vista, and seemed alot quicker too. I have only tested the RC when it came out so cant comment on the full release.

Vista is a good stable OS, which is better than XP in every way. You can't put the original posters issue down to instability, he just needed to disable automatic updates.

Do you honestly think his DJ'ing software will be supported by Ubuntu?

Not down for a bit of Windows bashing, eh Tim? Say what you like about it, regardless of whether the issue was, on this occasion, caused by instability - Windows is an over-engineered, inherantly unstable OS.

I'm sure there would be software available for Ubuntu that would offer the same functionality as that he is currently utilizing in his DJ software.

Windows 7 aka Windows 6.5 aka Windows Vista SE is pretty good I thinhk. I haven't messed with a retail copy yet cause I'm broke but the RC left good impressions. I'm not in hurry to upgrade though. When I have a job again, I will get it most likely but Vista is still doing alright for now.

And that update ****, what frickin time of day was this cause last I checked, not only are updates turned on by default but they are set to update at 3AM. AND, was he even at the laptop when it did it? Normally there's a notification that alerts you that the updates have finished and that the computer is going to reboot automatically in so much time. It gives you an option to postpone the reboot in 5 minutes, 1 hour or 4 hours typically.

I've done my fair share of Windows bashing, but bashing it when it's a user error isn't really fair is it? :p

The only unstable Microsoft OS's I've had the misfortune of using are Windows 98 and Windows ME, both poor OS's riddled with issues. Windows 2000, XP and Vista however, have proved stable and have generally been superb.

I use Ubuntu on my laptop, it's great, but it's useless for certain things. I'd be surprised if you could get this DJ'ing software working without writing 9859435 lines of code and a lot of faffing.

As you can see from the picture the software works in a window and not full screen, there was no notification to warn him that the PC was going to reboot, it just randomly switched to the blue update screen. The laptop is connected to two cd mixers that allows the music on the hard drive to be downloaded onto the decks. This means he has to look at it every 3mins to load in a new song and mix it in. He did then disable the automatic updates when it loaded again. To be fair for a laptop that came with XP it was able to get back online pretty quickly!

and yes Techy it was about 3 in the morning :p the place is licensed till 5am lol

looking for upgrade from vista to windows 7 what is the best way to do it upgrade cd or full version?

Oh full version. NEVER use an upgrade. Do a full format and a clean install.

Yup, As Techy says, I have seen so many problems with upgrades. Always best to install an Operating system from fresh.

I second that, UPGRADE doesn't work, do a fresh clean install.

I've using windows 7 for more that a month right now, and I have a big smile on my face, I've using windows since the old windows 3.11 and this is the best operative system from microsoft that I've ever tried :win:

I have some customers that wanted to get rid of Vista, and I installed Windows 7 Ultimate, and they love it.

what about all my drivers and vaio stuff on my current laptop?
sorry for silly question

You back up your personal **** and after you do a fresh install of 7, you track down any needed drivers. Often 7 already has most of what you need or Windows Update will install needed drivers. And you should be able to install any extra Sony software you need from Sony's website.

cheers will do.
should i go ultimate and is it worth the money

If you want the extra **** it's got. I myself am probably just gonna go with Home Premium x64 cause I think it'll have all I need but you never know I may spring for the Ultimate version.

I have tested some vista drivers out on windows 7 on several different spec machines and some work, some complain but still work and others don't.
Best go to the manufacturers site for your hardware and see if they have released Windows 7 drivers yet.

What do you think of the professional version? :angry2:
