VTEC Camshafts Specs / Comparison for Honda B series Engines

specs:

-Spoon shortblock
-mildly ported ITR head
-SPOON CAMS
-cam pulleys (can't remember setting anymore)
-Spoon header
-decat
-Vision midpipe
-custom Ti-backbox
-remapped ECU
-stock fuel pressure/injectors

Spoon cams have this kind of potential.... but you will NOT see these kind of gains without the cam pulleys and remappable ecu PLUS the rest of the mods listed.

Raging Angel those are nice numbers. What kind of ecu are you running?
Finally i bought the cams, and got them for around U$550 shipped to my house.
Due to the fact i can sell my CTR cams for around U$450, i said what the hell.
As i stated before, im currently running my ek with the following:
- b16b stroked to 1.8 with itr pistons.
- b16b header
-b16 b intake manifold
- ctr stock ecu
- spoon headgasket
- aem FPR

I have a set of buddy club cam pulleys i boght for my previous ek4 and never used, so ill probably put those.
Do you think ill get some incresa in power or better response, just by putting them?
Menawhile, im thinking about getting a power FC or maybe have the ecu tuned with crome, cause theres a guy that is tuning with crome, but hes just started a couple of months ago. I had the opportunity to buy an hondata but there was no one that could tune it for me in here, so ill had to stick with a ctr base map or an itr....

What do you think?

Thanks

It is entirely possible to run the Spoon cams on the stock ecu and just bump the base fuel pressure a few psi to keep things safe. Of course if you had a wideband O2 sensor and a method to datalog - it would be best.

Long ago, before datalogging/dyno'ing became widely available we would just use a video camera to record the tach and the wideband reading together and made adjustments like that.

I would highly recommend that you do not have it tuned yet until you can afford to complete the full I/H/E combo. Otherwise you will be spending money on dyno time unnecessarily.

You will also need a bigger throttle body. I forgot to mention that this motor also received a Spoon spec throttle body. 70mm before the butterfly.

The ECU we used was a very expensive unit from Techtom. Essentially, it is for burning OBDII chips. This proved to be a mistake as we soon learned that while the tune was pretty good, I'm sure with hondata/crome/etc. we could have broken the magic 200whp barrier and ended up with possibly 145trq.

Raging angel, with the spoon cams, can I still use my EK9 stock valvetrain (valve springs and retainers) or I have to upgrade them?

thanks.

it's perfectly fine to use the stock valvetrain.

Thanks.
Even in the case i go with another ecu? and rev limit?
Up to what rpms are the stock valvetrain safe?

Thanks

PD. My spoon cams arrived yesterday!!!!!!!!!!

Based on Spoon's information - their ecu cuts the fun at 9000rpm.

there are motors/setups out there, B-series specific that can make power beyond 9000rpm.

However, CSB has no where near the level of mods performed as the setup I posted on the last page and even if he did match all the mods, it's clear that the Spoon cams run out of steam at 8400rpm.

That techtom brain kills the fun right around 9100-9200rpm.

So itll be safe for use the cams with stock valvetrain even with the spoon ecu or a similar tune up to 9000 rpm. I dont want to go any higer, i just like to go safe and get the best out of the motor. Im thinking a bout buying an Apexi power FC unit.
One more thing, due to the fact the cams where slightly used, but in great shape, and didnt come with any boxes, how can i be 100% sure they are spoon (the ebay sellar had a great rep).

Thanks

I did the same mod to my b16a, ITR IM and springs(retainers i used mine since they look better and they been under less stress), initialy i was going to use the ITR cams, but with exange of them and extra cash i put my hands on spoon cams!

For my self i´m going to tune it with S300 and WB LC1(dattaloging are possibel with them) but for now(i´m waithing for the S300) i will run it with stock p2t ECU tuned by the fuel pressur regulator! Good for passing the smog testes!

I will strongly suggest you to use at least the LC1 WB or PLX one with the same possibility of dattaloging!

There's no way to really tell if they are spoon cams unless you measure them.

You have to mesure de lobes, vtec and non vtec, wath i can recal between ITR and my Spoon ones is that intake cams on vtec seems to be almost the same, but non-vtec lobs are bigger! Then on the Exaust cam you will notice a bigger lobs non-vtec and Vtec!

Don't remenber the exact numbers....I will check if I find my mesurements!

Thanks pumpingiron.
By the way, did you notice much of a difference?

Over stock b16a....them yeahhhh, but only rising fuel pressure is not enought i went for LC1 and Hondata tuning to make it reliabel and good for smog test!

I get it cheap, but if you want to buy new i think is a mistake, to expensive!

Ya i trade my 96-99 itr cams to spoon one for 50 euros(65$us)...I get lucky I supose LOL

ITR cams was in mint condition, spoon ones a little less...i supose the owner before use it with High rate springs, and since spoon cams are recast oem the material are less rigid than some aftermarket brands! I put it with itr valvetrain mixed with my B16a valvetrain! Don't want to rev over 8800 anyways!.....For now!!!
