Treating rear arches on the inside

Awesome write up buddy!
I've got a tiny bit of surface rust coming through on one of my arches, need to have a look hoping it isn't too bad

best check it sooner than later, im now doing the chassis where it gets most water and salt hitting it, wont need to do it again for god knows how long! This stuff is used to protect oil rigs out at sea apparently :)

Yeah mate got it checked out, it is just minimal surface rust and guy said its becase the back bumper had dropped slightly. So just gettin that repaired, still want to put some rust protection in the inside incase it does come through in the future!

:nice:

Awesome write up....possibly tidy it up and make a sticky i say :nice:

I will be doing some of this but i will be looking to sand that stuff down lightly then paint it y-56 again so it looks more original, but thats because i have OCD

What size of kit did you go for for the epoxy mastic?

Starter Pack (5m 2)?
Chassis Pack (10m 2)?
Or was it individual's?

Think the starter pack would be ok as its 5m 2..... and its the cheapest :p

lol cheers, write ups aint my speciality so ye il go over it again and add a few more pics soon.

Ye i did the same went for the cheapest (5m2), the de-greaser, phos kleen B, epoxy and thinners came to £49 with delivery and then £9.98 VAT ontop!

i never had OCD til i started stripping back this sir and its now taken over my life :D im guna try adding 10% thinners with some epoxy and use it as a spray on some parts of the chassis but not before testing it on some scrap metal. You can notice brushmarks when using a brush (obviously) and i dont want that on some parts of the car but thats just me :))

how many posts have you just made across the forum in the last 10 minits...???

i aint bitching but c'mon man, if your guna add your 2cents, make it worthwhile!!

you'd just use waxoyl right??? LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! great advice

My apologies. I certainly would use waxoyl. I would cut out the effected area, plate it or use a repair panel, repair it, paint it and then use waxoyl on the inside of the area to prevent it from reoccuring. This is standard procedure in motor repair. Hope that was a little more useful

To add to the above it is note worthy that rust is in fact metal turning back to its raw state and will only occur when both water an oxygen are present. Therefore waxoyl which prevents oxygen reaching the metal is a fantastic method of stopping rust in its tracks and would be far more cost effective than using a fancy kit. Although I have got a lot of respect for the time and effort that have clearly gone into repairing the car. Top job!

Waxoyl over that would have done better than nothing but epoxy mastic and rust remover is waaaay better than just waxoyl. And if you cut the arch out there are no repair panels for the inner so you have to fabricate it yourself which is a right arse-ache I can tell you! Just about finished 1/4 of the first arch and I will be applying epoxy mastic just as shown in this thread and it'll be fine for another 20 years hopefully.

Yeah I feel your pain with the fabrication part. I used to work in motorbody repair and fabrication takes so much time and energy. But as you say it will be good for another 20 years or so. Do it right first time

totally agree with both of you, making new panels and fabricating them will be seriously time consuming not to mention the cost. I paid about £50 for this epoxy kit and like said it should keep it safe for another 20 years.

The PHOS KLEEN B is some amazing stuff, the picture i added where its really shiny looks abit of a mess and never took a picture after the second coat but you can tell its just what you need for turning surface rust back to 'clean metal'.

If the arches were alot worse i would of had no choice to have it repaired professionaly but for the people in my situation where it isnt too bad you can rest easy knowing its going to help no end, especially with waxoyl over the top of the epoxy.
