will do, ill be doing it soon as possible.

I bet some people would be suprised if they took the rear plastics out! I was expecting a rusty mess with mine but hardly any rust for a 19year old car :naughty:

Wouldn't bother with red-oxide, the modern day stuff doesn't contain the same potent chemicals it once did. Use some epoxy paint on it and then wax on top of that such as Dinitrol.

2 pack epoxy - Rust proofing, prevention products for automotive: Marine:Industrial:Waxoyl

This stuff is also iso free: Jotun Jotamastic 80 epoxy boat primer White 4.6L | eBay

Interested in this epoxy stuff, problem is i would have to brush it on (no access to spray gun etc) and i would like to paint y-56 over it... so do you think you could sand it down smooth once dry and then primer, paint, laquer and waxoil over it??

I was going to red oxide it until you said not too.... :nerv:

i reckon you could.

taken from that link..

"What is the finish like?

Epoxy Mastic can be brush or spray applied like any other paint. It is supplied with Epoxy thinners to reduce viscosity when painting smaller components. It can be painted over or left alone.
It really is the complete answer, a high performance paint finish that has no equal"

yeah it says you can paint over it, my question was really linked to the sanding/smoothing of it as i will have to brush it on :nice:

Maybe just be a trial and error

Yeh, it can be sanded. Depending on the surface you're coating, could you use a roller instead?

When buying the epoxy make sure it is isocyanate free, the two in my link are but there are dangerous ones containing isocyantates.

Also, zinc primer followed by stonechip then paint topcoat and then wax is a good protection but remember to let the topcoat cure before applying wax.

That price is for 1Ltr in a tin have one myself, a 400ml aerosol is £11.95!

It is good stuff raved on about by Integra owners.

do you think the zinc primer would be better than the epoxy? that epoxy sounds really good to me and has zinc in it so it says.

so is this the right order of what needs to be done yeah..

Remove rust

Anti corrosion

De-grease

Epoxy mastic

Paint

Wax

Yep, sounds good, that's what I'm planning on doing for my EG when I get around to replacing the arches. Just remember that the rust remover is just the icing on the cake and that you need to remove as much rust as possible before epoxy etc. so rust doesn't come back.

That stuff is good I'm treating my car with the hydrate 80 then the zinc primer then paint and then the clear stonechip for protection.

great thanks. whats under the eg's bonnet?? :naughty:

A massive D15b! :) Need to put a mountain of parts back in the EK4 and finish painting it before I can even think about the EG.

ha massive aint they. I bought a lsi for my winter car and enjoy the challenge to overtake someone :D

should be up for sale soon as i get this sir in order. J reg and 66k miles!

that signature is epic only just noticed it :naughty:

finally got round to sorting out the arch, hardest part is preparing the area that your treating, took hours of work and awkward positions but got there in the end. I waxoild the inside last year and had to get rid of it before painting :angry2: should be alot easier if you dont have to do this!

what i was dealing with after the prep was done..

( i hadnt prepd the wheel well yet, only the arch )

What i used (with links to where i got some parts)

Face mask if in a closed space (the epoxy STINKS)
Drill
Flexible extension FLEXIBLE DRILL SHAFT 36" POWER TOOL FLEXI DRIVE | eBay
Magnetic pick up tool
Wire brushes 2 PC DE-CARB WIRE ROTARY BRUSH SET FLAT TIP & POINTED | eBay
Wire wool
Sandpaper
Light shining on what your doing
Torch
Empty bottle and something to mix epoxy in
Clean cloth or 2

Rust proofing, rust prevention products for automotive: Marine:Industrial:Waxoyl
Rustbuster SP10 De-greaser
Rustbuster Phos Kleen B
Rustbuster Epoxy mastic

For doing this a flexible extension on the drill and magnetic pick up tool is a MUST. Getting into places without the extension is impossible and the magnetic tool picks up so much rust and wire wool especially from the places you cant see.

Be carefull when using the drill and wirebrush between the arch and body, it can 'bite' but you soon get a feel for it! I also removed the seatbelt so it gave me more room to work along with the side strips which are held by 3 clips.

After your happy that all the rust, grease, waxoil, bits of metal, wirewool etc has been removed check it again! and then you need to..

Clean area using the sp10 de-greaser, it says you can use neat or mix with water upto 4:1 ( 4parts water, 1part sp10)

Leave it dry

Clean area again using the Phos Kleen B. DONT dilute this, use it neat and wait for it to dry, says to wipe clean with a little water after its dry due to a chance of salt buildup during the cure. I went over the metal twice with this stuff, once dry its got a real silver shine to it! picture shows what its like after the first coat

Now the epoxy mastic. You mix equal parts of A and B to get your final mix so you dont need much of each for this job. Says upto 15% thinners can be used, i went for about 5%, basically nothing.

DSC04286.jpg

WAIT 10 MIN BEFORE USING THE MIXED EPOXY

Paint onto area.

Wait for it to dry. Im leaving overnight as it says will depend on atmosphere and wales has a sh*t atmosphere!

DSC04288.jpg

Make a new mix of A and B and apply second coat

DSC04411.jpg

Waxoil over the top of the second coat once its dry and you should be set!

Now do the otherside :D
