First off, I am a complete Honda noob, so please forgive my ignorance. I currently drive an E38 1999 BMW 740i and I am looking for something more tune-friendly. Specifically a 6th gen Civic hatchback.

Question #1:
EK9 Civic's are only Type-R and only in Japan, correct? And here in the United States, all we have is the EJ9, correct?
Question #2: Lets say I wanted to go buy a manual 6th Gen Civic Hatchback here in the US. Would it be easy to mod that one with Honda engine swaps and such (b16, b18, etc)? Basically, can I make it into a Type-R with JDM-style parts?

Please forgive me for these questions, but I am confused with all the different chassis codes and all.

1a - Correct, the EK9 is the Type R.
1b - Incorrect, the USDM hatchback is an EJ6. Then there are EJ6, EJ7, EJ8 and EM1 coupes and EJ6 and EJ8 sedans.
Here's a link that covers chassis codes: http://www.superstreetonline.com/how-to/chassis-suspension/1312-honda-chassis-code-checklist/
2 - Yes, Civics are fairly easy to mod. And you can make any 6th gen hatch very similar to a Type R but there are several chassis differences which are unlikely to duplicate. It can still be a fun car though.
Researching helps a lot... and the internet is full of useful information, as is this site:

Thank you very much
