I'm in need of replacing my starter motor.

simply where is it? Like specifically.

is it an easy job to do yourself? I guess its just undo bolts and bolt new one in?

EDIT: forgot to say its on a B16A2

It sits on top of the gearbox a little towards the rear, I can take a picture for you tomorrow. I should have a spare if you need one.

does that mean you need to get under the car or can do from the top? + does engine need go come out?

if you have a spare working one that would be great

I really don't think you need to remove the engine lol, your air intake will probably need to come out. I THINK there are two bolts that hold it, the upper you can get to from the top, the lower one I'm not sure. I have a whole engine + box sitting on a pallet in the garage so I'll take a picture for you tomorrow, that should give you a really good idea as to where the bolts are. The starter motor is off my old B16B but I'm sure they are the same, it's working just fine!

how many miles your engine done and how much you want for the starter?

I think it's done 120k, at least that's what's on the clock lol. £10 plus postage which will depend on how fast you want it. It never gave me any bother and I would have been re-using it if my new engine/box didn't come with one already fitted.
Here's how it is attached, just two 14mm bolts - simples!
The first picture shows the position of the two bolts when viewed from behind, you will be looking from the front so you won't see the lower bolt directly but this tells you where it is. There was a random plastic hose holder lying on the engine obscuring the upper bolt in the first picture so I took another picture of the upper bolt, that one you will see without any issues it's easily accessible! A 14mm socket and an extension bar is all you should really need!

the black bracket in the first photo? It that the l/h/s engine mount?

Most starters should be compatible. The starter in my EK9 is off my old EJ9 with the D14

Yep that's the engine mount. Replacing it is seriously easy! Disconnect from the loom, two bolts out, wiggle the knackered starter motor out (towards the engine mount), new one in, bolts back in, attach loom - done. 1/2 hour job I'd say depending on what else you'll need to remove to get access (maybe strut brace or air intake arm) I removed mine after I took the head off so it was a walk in the park.

probs a stupid question, how do I disconnect from the loom? Is it just a square clip?

I'm gunna have a look at it tomorrow

There's two things you'll need to disconnect - the power cable from the battery - this is held on by a nut so just undo the nut and a single wire from the loom, just pull it off like any other connector. Honestly this is a Haynes one spanner affair :D

yeah, I always take battery off when on electronics.

one wire and 2 bolts seems easy enough. Just hope the benedix drive hasn't come off into the bell housing.

just thought id post some photos and check before ripping it off...

ive deffo got the starter motor, just do the 2 bolts circled need to be removed in addition to the 2 you showed oifovo?

bit less room around it in the bay lol

Nope no need to touch those, they hold the starter motor together. Just the two 14mm I circled plus the two cables on the right - the fatter one is the positive feed from the battery, just peel back the cover and you'll find a nut there, take that off and remove the power cable. Then unplug the other connector and wiggle it out. You can hit it with a piece of wood a couple times to help it a bit if it doesn't come straight out. Also, don't remove the cables from the holder that is attached to the starter motor, far easier to remove the holder and put it back on the new starter motor.

the holder? you mean the bit int he top of my photo?

im gunna try get it off tomorrow/saturday so hope to understand what you mean by then

Yeah the bit on the top that holds the loom, it's attached to the starter motor by a single bolt (10 or 12mm I think). You'll be fine, I can remember how nervous I was when I was doing my first bits on the car, just a few years ago - even the simplest things like changing the thermostat were a "challenge". :) A few years later and I'm taking my 9 to bits to do what is getting dangerously close to a nut and bolt restoration. I'm taking my old engine and box out tomorrow!

thanks for the advice

its far nicer to explain things than take the Michael. You really think I haven't googled this first?

I found a starter motor in my garage today if you need one.
Really simple job if you just look at it. Going into too much detail and over thinking makes it a much more daunting task than it is.
As said. Two bolts hold it to the gearbox. Two wires attached to the starter need to come off,
Job done.
