hi guys, I was wondering whether any of you have ever built or owned a single seater for racing. I'm still not decided yet whether to do it or not. The thought came to my mind when I went at my friend's house and he had a cbr900 engine tucked in a corner and well I just dont know how much work actually entails in building the chassis and the rest. what do you think?

what do you exactly mean by single seater? like a an open wheel tube framed car?

yeah a formula style car with a bike engine on it.

I didn't own one, but I had the chance to drive like 3 used for racing in my local championship, great fun and you can learn a lot from driving karts. Also after driving a couple of times, my ribs hurted for a while :)

yeah I drove one too once. The acceleration is ballistic and you really feel everything on your body. No wonder pro drivers spend half the day at the gym.

take a look at this one guys - amazing!!

YouTube - formula 3

**** that thing is quick!!!!.. and aful good throught the bends!!.. would love to build something like this just for fun :p..

had a go in one as well. really good fun, the handling and braking is unbelievable! My little cousin races karts, when i first seen them racing i couldnt believe how fast they were, 0-60 in around 3.5 secs!

i've also driven a basic single seater car on track, great fun,
not the cheapest thing to build from what i've seen, your best option may be to look for a already built car thats in need of attention as it would give you a base to work from.

Yeah I thought of that as well, but I need an opinion on someone's personal experience with regards to maintenance...

That's a good video, it almost looks sped up! Looks like you could easily die in that little thing on those road course tracks.

yeah, these drivers have bigger balls than guys on gp2 or f1. There is no room for error in hill climbing

That guy is insane!!
Major Kudos to him though!

I think to build one you really should draw up some plans.
Me and some uni mates are going to sometime in the future.
Get some tubing together and a welder!
BUSA ENGINE!!!!!

I think that if you are building a one off it should be fine as long as you test everything and you know about your engineering. It's all about the plan though (and also budget)

your best bet would be to get a rolling chassis, like a van diemen, ray, sheane, etc... and bolt the engine on. Rolling chassis' are easily enough found and relatively cheap. Formula Jedi use a bike engine but cant remember off the top of my head what engine it is. For the money though you could get a pretty good racing kart, trust me,they're worth every penny :)
