seeking advice on Over head linesman.

Hi all,
Sorry for not really introducing myself properly i will do so in the correct section soon but for now.

Basically I've been searching the internet for a long time trying to figure out what
qualification and experience is needed to take up a career as a overhead linesman. All the information i came across wasn't very clear.

Are they're any members on here that have any information about it?
Does this sector offer apprenticeships or any sort of training scheme because my local colleges doesn't specifically offer this sort of thing.

I know that NIE here in northern ireland have an apprenticeship scheme, not sure what you need but its a few year apprenticeship and i know lads have went in straight out of school.

From what ive found the majority of the schemes are not in west midlands which is were im from. It seems a pretty promising career with great prospects and the danger element makes it that bit more interesting. As of this month i will be 17 so being able to drive should be great as there is a fair bit of travel.
 
The college I work at is running 12 week courses the now. Basically you finish the course on the final Friday and start work with a company on the Monday.

Need to pass a fitness test for the course/interview and a hands on test as well just to be loaded onto the course.
The course is intended for people with no experience in the area as well.

I will look into college courses in more depth but as it stands pretty much non in my local area run these sort of things. All the schemes that are offered not to far away have now closed anyway but if i could get onto a course that boosts chances that would be great.

It's not a college run course as such, it's privately funded by the companies.
While on the course the guys also get paid basic unemployment wage as well, it's mainly intended to get people off benefits.

Companies round my way renewing the lines are CIET and Freedom which is a utilities company. I'd fire your cv off to a few companies and ask about future courses.

Theres a few companies my way but to get into it they all want 3+ years experience and all the qualifications needed to do the job. Tbh mainly looking into apprenticeships since im only 16, an the all schemes sort the college training out anyway.

Basically soon I will be going through the western power distribution apprenticeship scheme recruitment process etc and I was just wondering if anyone has any pointers in general? it will Be to do overhead lines and or underground cables.

Any advice appreciated guys.

My mate has just started his course at college through IQA, he's done a fair bit of electrical theory like magnetic flux etc although he doubts he'll ever use it while doing over head stuff.

It's a pretty physical course, plenty of winching stuff up, climbing up and down all day as well as doing the rescue as well.

Congrats man... Have you a choice weather its cables or lines? Im in my 3rd year apprenticeship in underground cable jointing for NIE and love it! I done 2 weeks of overhead lines for an appreciation of it, hard work!

My apprenticeship is a 3 year course covering 2 years doing electrical enginnering in college and also coving a QCF L3 in cable jointing. Im sure yours will be something similar.

I will most likely be doing the overhead lines tbh I do a taster of all the disciplines.
Western power have a purpose built training center in my area and all training is there.

What sort of work did you do in the 2weeks mate?
