One of the boys has handed his cam cover in for powder coating. Someone has since told him the sand can get into parts of the cover and could damage the engine. Any truth in this ?

Yes, it's true. Theres' been a case where the grit/sand used to blast the cover has blocked the oil pump or pickup; Starved the engine of oil, an ended up with a badly damaged engine. Make sure it's spotless everywhere before putting it back onto the car or your friend will learn the hard way :)

I had the same I got my one sand blasted and powder coated had to use a fiver of petrol a airline and a couple cloths to clean out the rocker cover. Was a pain. But that was 3 months ago hasn't wrecked the engine yet.

Paint stripper is all you should ever use on cam covers, I would not want a sandblasted cover on my engine. Make sure it is washed WELL, I would jet wash it, let it dry and then use compressor to blow everything out and I would repeat the process, just in case. Sand and is the last thing you want anywhere near your engine internals!

You will never clean it out 100% without removing the baffle plate which can be a bastard to re-fit. I had my last cover cleaned in an acid bath worked a treat.
