Hi i hav a 96 vti standard gearbox im looking to make the most of it, im looking at an after market diff or would a ek9 diff do.if i wanna put an ek9 diff in do i need the final drive for it to. also i have access to a y21 would that be a better box or should i combine the both. cheers JP

The following info is meant for Bseries HYDRO transmissions specifically.

In order to mix and match successfully, one must use the LSD/open diff AND the final drive (ring gear + countershaft/pinion) from the donor box before it will fit into the new box.

So in your case, using a B16A box, you would need the EK9 LSD plus the final drive before you can get it to fit into the B16A box.

Your options are to purchase an aftermarket LSD that is intended to fit your B16A box...or to purchase an aftermarket final drive (for better acceleration or taller gears) and use the EK9 LSD if so you desire.

Whatever you decide to do, don't forget to shim the diff (this process is detailed in the service manual) and change out the differential/LSD carrier bearings. It may also be a good time to inspect and change the input shaft bearing and install new axle seals.

raging gonna match my s4c wit b20 looking at buying a new lsd i know you sell a helical one im looking at kaaz and yours roughly around that price just wandering if any one has anything to contribute to help me cheers JP

Helical one is more desirable if you intend to drive primarily on the street.

The main reasons are:

1) no parts that requiring servicing. KAAZ or any metal/clutch type LSD will eventually require a rebuild. Some as soon as 10,000 kms but don't expect it to last any more than 25,000 - 30,000kms.

2) no special oils/additives necessary for a helical LSD.

3) no noise and ease of operation around town. Clutch LSDs are often quite aggressive and can pop/lock during tight maneuvers say around a parking lot - making day to day driving a chore.

The clutch pack LSD is desirable if you intend to do a lot of track days or if it's a race/track car only. The performance you get vs. a helical is a marked improvement as the initial and overall lock can be adjusted to suit the driver and/or track.
