Hi guys I was looking at my wheels earlier when I noticed there was a small 1.5-2cm patch of bubbling on my rear right arch where the bumper meets the arch I moved the rubber seal around it back and sure enough theres some surface rust there. I checked the left arch and there was only a smal dot of rust near the side skirt.

I gave the arches a clean with a wire brush and just put some grease to stop it getting any worse. I was planning on getting some waxoyl stuff to seal the under body with but I was waiting for it to get a bit warmer so I could give the under body a good clean and then apply the waxoyl but now im not sure what to do about the rust thats already started?
Anyone have any tips for me

I grabbed a few pictures but my neighbours van was parked next to me and the light was bad

I had the exact same issue at the bottom of the arch on my silver ej. Put it into the body shop to get sorted, he rubbed it back and said there wasnt much metal left so he filled it and painted it. Came back within a week or 2.

Basically to get rid of rust you need to cut it out. So if your serious about the car i would start saving.

Don't put waxoyl on it.

Get a wire wheel and go at it until it's bright bare metal, then zinc primer, then paint, then lacquer.

As above, get a good wire wheel and remove all the rust, you'll have to do both sides of the lip. In reality you will never remove all the rust and it will come back, may last a year or two depending on how good a job you do. When it comes back it will need cutting out and replacing.

Thanks for the help guys ill give it ago with a wire wheel and re paint it and see how it goes but the left arch is in pretty good condition so im going to put waxoyl or something to seal it and hopefully it wont end up rusty

Would it be fine to put waxoyl on the other arch that has only a small spot in rust which I got off with a wire brush? Or should I do the same and re spray the arch?

wire brush will not remove the rust. You need to get to healthy metal for it to work, wire brush won't do that. The biggest mistake people do when treating rust is that they don't go deep enough. even wire wheel probably won't remove it all, still way better than brush tho.

Okay ill give it a go with a wheel wheel and zinc primer it, re paint, lacquer and see how long that lasts and if it gets worst then ill have to cut the arch out and put in a new one.
Thanks for the help

To be honest, If your fussy and want to 'build' the car and preserve it for the future it looks like it need's new arches.

The inner archers will tell you the whole story, Give them a check. Wish I never sold my SiR Civic was minty! As you can see there is a seam which is quite a nice moisture storage area unfortunately.

Thanks for the advice ill check the inner arches should get it on a lift in the next few days. I think I will probably eventually do both arches and give it a full respray if I keep it long enough

I had slight bubbling on my arches, inner arches were totally rotten. I ended up getting a set of inners made up.

You can't 'cure' rust. It needs to be cut out.

I checked the under body while I was doing my coilovers and it seems fine just the bottom of the arch is tarting to rust

Wire wheel won't be enough,a Dremel and wheel is best for diy job but ull never get rid of it all. Place online is cheap for civic rear arches

Bilthamber deox gel,

This will remove the rust if used correctly, it should leave clean but pitted steel,

Is the inner arch ok?

The inner arch looked fine I think ita just surface rust on the outer part from the water that sat in the rubber seal thats on the arch

My friend has a rust trement that he used on his mx5, not sure what brand it is tho

Most of the rust converters don't really work, you need a rust remover and plenty of time as they can be pretty slow and require several applications
