Away to remove the sound deadening from my car soon and instead of spending hours with a hammer and chisel, wondered if theres something that will soften it before getting it removed.

Im sure i seen a build up thread where some guy used a can of something which made it so much easier but can't seem to find it.

Any help would be great.

Heating it up will make it sticky and harder to remove.
Pretty sure i read you freeze it.
Me and my bro just done his starlet and it took about an hour, with a hammer and chisel. It came of pretty easy.
By the time you go and get a can of freeze spray you could have done one side of the floor pan.

Yeh the best way seems to be freezing it with pipe spray. You can get it from any plumbers wholesalers. Spray it on, leave it a few secs then hit it with a hammer and it should cleanly break off.

I'm sure there are some tutorials on YouTube if you search it.

I have been thinking of doing this to my Jordan but I was wondering how much weight it will save? Is it really worth doing?

Cheers guys, yeah you will need to freeze it and seen it on some guys build but can't bloody find it now. Ill have a look at plumbers stuff etc and see what options i can use.

I beleive there can be a decent amount of weight removed. Remember some guy removed all deadening and weighed it and came to 5-6 kg. Every little helps! :)

A couple kilos, we filled up a poly bag out the starlet, and it has less of it than civics.

I removed my sound deadening a few weeks back, hammer and chisel done the job and basically lifted it as easy as in that video above

Here's a picture after giving it a quick rub with de-tar:

Take all the deadening off of the back of the carpet, saves about 1kg and makes quite a difference to noise. Easiest way I found was peel off as much with your hands then use wire brush for the rest.

Trying the pipe freeze method tonight and ill let you know how i get on with it. Might do a patch without the freeze and with to see what the difference is.

Kieran - That looks a great job, did de-tar really help get rid of every last bit?

Yea de-tar made a good job of it.. I sprayed it on, left it a minute and wiped it off and then any small chunks that were left I scraped off with the chisel. Then sprayed on some more de-tar and gave it a final wipe and it lifted every last bit. :nice:

De-tar worked well for me aswell....although if all else fails, petrol on a rage does the jobs well, just be carefull with stripping the paint off aswell!

i found a few taps with a rubber mallet in a few places got it up, it just cracked in places and lifted in massive sheets of it, took me about half an hour to do the rear :)
