Rebuilding 98 Spec DC2 Driveshafts

I've done a fair amount of research and googling on this subject and I'm still not quite 100% certain.

So I need to rebuild at least my passenger side outer CV joint on my driveshaft after I mangled the threads on it trying to get it out of the hub. :angry2:
I may as well do both side while I'm there.

Trying to get new oem Honda ones would be a nightmare (being JDM only parts) and extortionate at a guess.

After asking around apparently I have a couple of options available.

1) MK1 CRV use the same outer CV joint? (can't find any information to back this up though)
2) 5th Gen BB6 Prelude CV joints fit as well (found a couple of threads where people used these)

Obviously I need the 36mm, 28 spline ends.
I have Non ABS hubs and shafts in my car. So I presume the shafts with an ABS ring wouldn't fit in the hub? Could I just knock the ABS ring off the end?

Am I also correct in saying that all the inner CV joints on B series cars are the same? Including the passenger side shaft to the half shaft?

Any solid information would be appreciated!

Thanks

Can't help with fitment but yes, you can knock the ABS ring off but it will fit even if you leave it on. I knocked them off because saving 10 grams really makes a difference lol

Sweet, well that's half of the issue sorted for me. :) Should make finding a CV joint easier if I don't need to worry about non abs compatibility.

Just changed the cv joints on my vti shafts. Went with j&r joints but kept my oem shafts and they seem pretty decent quality tbf. Haven't installed them on the car yet though. Just stick your reg in and it should show you what's available.
Pretty sure the ABS ring doesn't affect the fitment as most are listed ABS/NON ABS so should go straight in.

And yes I'm 99% sure that the inner joints are all the same.

Quite a messy job just for the record lol grease gets everywhere

Unfortunately that won't be possible as it doesn't recognise my reg number as it's an import.
98 Spec tegs are unique in the fact that they have bigger shafts than any of the other type r cars from the 90's.

I've had confirmation though that the 5th gen prelude cv joints will fit so I will get a pair of J&R rebuild kits and see how I get on.

Ahh okay gotcha! yeah I've read they are bigger and different spline count

Awesome mate good luck :nice: when J&R sent me the joints, the first set didn't actually fit properly but turns out they sent a wrong set. Sent out a correct set free of charge straight away after counting the spline count and did a swap, no hassle thankfully

J&R are cheap and cheerful, I've had mixed experience with the quality of their products but for the money they are hard to beat. I have their driveshafts on the EK9 at the moment - with 4.9 final drive, Cusco plated diff and R888 they are getting a lot of abuse but are holding up well. And they cost £70 for the pair! I had to file a few of their CVs (due to poor tolerances / finishing on some units) to get them fit on my old Vitara offroader which was going through a lot of CVs (due to abuse more than anything) but again, they lasted as long as genuine Suzuki ones did and cost a fraction of the cost of genuine items.

Ah okay, I'll bare that in mind then. I think I'll offer up the cv up to the hub and make sure it fits before even thinking of taking the existing driveshaft apart!
Spoke to a mate of mine about this and the first company he suggested was J&R, a few people he knows run their shafts.

I spoke to the guys a Hendy Performance and they quoted me £260 for one CV joint from Japan!! :O I don't think so some how. haha

Ep3 civic type r have the same cv joints as a 98spec, like you said a 5 stud 36mm nut crv cv joint is also the same
