R1PPU's EJ9 Build Up

Paranoia causes issues I find lol
Honestly I'd just run a compression test and keep an eye on the oil level until you know the engine well enough.
Having gauges is obviously only going to help but they can be quite expensive for a gauge worth having.

For gauges I would invest in water (stock one is rubbish!), Oil pressure and oil temp that's really all you need to monitor.

Keep an eye on the oil too.

Yeah I've already found that it's a heap of crap, those were the 3 I was looking at :)

Been checking it every week, not used any oil which is nice! I'll probably do an oil change when uni calms down for christmas, we overfilled it a bit last time so a change wouldn't hurt haha.

Haha yup I know exactly what you mean. Already ahead of you there, gonna get a compression test next week hopefully :)

What gauges is it that you use? I remember them being reasonably priced but a decent brand?

Car came with sagav2 but they died.(oil temp still remains)
Now run stack gauges.
The cheaper versions run around £50 a gauge and I believe them to be accurate.

So it's been 1000 miles since the engine went in, all is well. Still got that EML, had an exam yesterday and got an assignment due on Friday, after that I'll get down to tracing that down. The thermostat I fitted before the engine went in seems to be faulty, so I've got another replacement which will hopefully sort my dodgy idle.

Hate to do an update without any pics or video's so here you go, still makes me laugh

haha jesus the rm01a is fair tame soundin isnt it nice sound but very quiet :nono: haha.

Glad to see such a great car with a bitta power behind it finally

Haha it has a baffled decat on it (for now), but this will be getting replaced for a straight through so will be a bit louder. TBH its pretty perfect atm, its at 4k RPM at 70mph and its pretty loud haha. I do motorway mileage mostly so this can get annoying!

Small update...

So over the festive period I didn't get any of the jobs done I wanted to... Got a new OEM thermostat and fitted that, eventually bled fine. I think my idle issue is related to the lambda, but I've not had a chance to check this. That's because last Monday I went for a drive with a mate up the Dukes Pass, and whilst I was up there the handbrake light came on indicating low brake fluid... Got it back to mines and a quick look showed that my front to rear nearside brake line had split. All I'll say is I'm lucky, the Dukes Pass is a very...twisty... road.

Checks before going up:

Whilst we were up there:

@Steve M came round and we made up a quick brake line so I could still drive the car. Looking at the offside line, it needed replaced too. I decided to run the lines inside the car to future proof it, which meant stripping the interior out. On Monday just gone Steve and @Frodo came round and spent the day helping me run the new lines and routing everything. I've spent the last few days tidying up bits and bobs and getting the brakes finished. Also sealed up a leak whilst it was all apart, its been raining non stop so I'm not sure if the sealant will dry...can only see how it goes.

The new lines came out nicely, will take it out for a blast tomorrow and hopefully wont have to bleed it again!

Also finally fitted the Carbing rear brace @markp gave me years ago, was a complete pain (thats the nice word...) of a job to cut the plastics neatly. I'll see if I can tidy it up a bit, but will probably get new plastics at some point. Didn't get any pictures of this because it was dark when I finished as usual haha.

Back to uni on Monday so progress will be non-existent, going into my last semester of my degree! See you on the other side :)

Congratulations :)

Got my exhaust sorted the other day, now have a proper decat and no exhaust rattles and blows :)

Had a free hour at uni on Friday so went for a drive, was ace. The car seems to love the cold! Going to miss Edinburgh when I leave in September.

Also wanted to procrastinate a bit earlier, so knocked up a quick CAD model for a gauge holder for when I eventually get some. Going to try to get it 3D printed at uni on the sly haha. Idea is to mount it in the slot above my cupholders (I have the facelift EK9 ones). I'm presuming that by when it's listed as 52mm size, that's what the inner diameter is?

Any vids now with the decat? :nerv:

Haha will get some soon man, sounds a lot cleaner now and sounds pretty loud from outside now haha!

Omfg I need a gear knob hat!!! Looks good mate :)

Haha had it a few years, its awesome in winter! Thanks man :)

Just read all this build, it's come a long way mate gave me a few ideas for my old ej9, she will deff be a b series this year,
Car looks nice man

Wow hope it didn't bore you too much haha! Thanks man, really appreciate it!

Rippu have a listen to my exhaust on jesses japfest2 thread, then you will know whats loud lol.

Yeah just had a listen, I ain't got nothing on that! Haha

So here's gauge holder V1, for the rough measurements I took it turned out really well. Need to take 5mm off the top edge and I can get rid of the side fixing tabs, due to the steel being a lot stronger than I was expecting, theres virtually no bending on the bottom tabs. Will get the gringer out over the weekend and trim it down!
