Ok, this question gets asked quite frequently! "What's the difference between Pre-Facelift and Facelift?"

Well, here's your answer!..

The Pre-Facelift was the original design of the Honda Civic when released in 1996. Upon late 1998, Honda released the Facelift version of this Civic.
As you can clearly see from the photos supplied above, Honda had made some slight changes to the original design of this Honda Civic, the newer version of this Honda Civic known as the "Facelift" version had;

  • New designed crystal clear front headlights
  • New designed front bumper, with added side groves (for optional add on front fog lights)
  • Clear side repeaters in the rear lights
  • Double din slot in the dashobards centre console
  • Harness altered
  • Modifyed injection rate
  • Newer / different ECU
  • Variest parts fine tuned, designed for high quality and improved performance

Pre-Facelift / Facelift FAQ's:

Q: Will a Facelift front bumper fit my Pre-Facelift EK9?
A: No.

Q: Will Facelift front headlights fit my Pre-Facelift EK9?
A: No.

Q: Will a set of rear Facelift lights (clear side repeaters) fit my Pre-Facelift?
A: Yes.

Q: Is the Facelift EK9 faster than the Pre-Facelift EK9?
A: No.

Q: Is there anyway I could get a Facelift front bumper and front headlights to fit my Pre-Facelift?
A: Yes, it is possible. In order for you to achieve the Facelift look, you will have to replace the following parts from a Civic Facelift;
- Front Facelift bumper
- Front Facelift headlights
- Front Facelift wings (fenders) (left and right side)
- Facelift bonnet (hood)

Bonnets (Hoods) and Wings (Fenders) are NOT interchangable with Facelift and Pre-Facelift EK9's. You can only have one or the other.
(Example:- Pre-Facelift wings (Fenders) will not line up with a Facelift front bumper, so if you wanted to buy a Facelift front bumper for your Pre-Facelift Civic, it wouldn't work, you will have to change everything listed above to get it to fit)

you don't have to change the radiator support actually to do facelift conversion.

Lovely work mate!

I say STICKY THIS so that all the people who turn up asking for this info can be pointed straight here

Few points to add (forgive me if I'm just being picky here)

Changing from pre-facelift -> facelift front end does NOT require slam panel to be changed, but will require headlights, wings, bumper & bonnet

Changing from pre-facelift -> facelift dashboard will require heater matrix (tricky), and heat is changed using electronic servos rather than cable type adjustment

Great write up! thanks!

+rep for you :)

Just to add, as this is something i keep getting asked.

"What is the difference with the Rx".

Late 99 Honda released a final run of the EK9 called the Type RX.
In addition to the face-lift the face-lift Rx got:-
1. Alloy pedals
2. Red stitch gear gaiter
3. Single din CD
4. Remote locking (receiver is a dome thing by the rear view mirror)
5. Polished CF effect heater control surround (as apposed to satin finish)

Dunx

go on youtube and look up ek9 videos , you will find one where its a man from honda speaking about the differences between them . there is actually a good number of small changes which is what lead to the facelift being slightly heavier .

it's strange just reminded me of sumin i saw the facelift has a bar between rear seats sumin to do wid extra safety but it weighs 10kg an also my SiR has no extra bar goin across front end by the slam pannel tat must weigh a bit?

RX = more standard options = more weight.

You get stuff like aluminium pedals, electric mirrors, etc. Theres always more options on top like sat nav etc etc.

Standard RX model weighs about 1099kgs.

Slipcivic: You forgot to add Grill. They are a separate piece to the bumper.

Basically;

-Hood/Bonnet
-Bumper + Lip
-Headlights
-Grill
-Fenders L/R

The bumper Mounting Hinges needs to be cut for the bumper to fit (Pre-facelift > Facelift).

I've done it on mine.

I thought the ducts in the facelift bumper where there to aid brake cooling and not for fog lights?

I thought the facelift also had better programmed ABS?

tbh you would have been better just saying that the pre-facelifts are overall better :blabla:
