pdapaul's YellowSpeed Time Attack EKK24 on ITBS

Morning Ben,
Always grateful for any help in making the car better/safer. Even if it's a small chance that's more than enough reason to change it! Cheers bud, I appreciate the input :)

No worries Paul, I would just hate to see your hard earned money and your hundreds of man hours go to waste. Thats what these forums are for. People can take away a lot of what you have done with your car also.

Looking forward to the next updates and race results.

Ben

Excellent result Paul!! The car is flying now, I'm sure your very happy :nice:

Quick question for you, did you order your wheels direct from Team Dynamics uk, and how long did they take to arrive from ordering? I have ordered a set of 15x7 from Demon tweeks and it states 13days but I'm not sure if thats optimistic

Cheers bud, really pleased, there's definitely more to come from it as well!

Yes I ordered straight from TD. DT might be 13 days, as they use a standard 15 x7 and then use a collar to make the hub size correct. When you order them from TD they are milled to the right size so you don't need collars. If ordering from TD you're looking 5-6wks min I would think.

My fastest lap & new Club NA lap record of 53.5. Not the cleanest lap I'm ever going to do, but it felt like the quickest way on the day was to hustle it around. Looking afterwards I can see tenths here and there, so I genuinely think a 52 is doable. I know it doesn't look much to to put it into context the previous record was set by a metro 6R4, and I beat the previous club fwd record which was held by Romains monty supercharged CRX!!!!

Nice laptime Paul!

Its probably the gopro (I find the footage looks alot slower than it feels) but I'd say you've got a good portion of time to make up at paddock, you looked to turn in afew car lengths earlier than I would and can see your having to turn the wheel abit sharper as your hitting apex. Do you have apex speed data for this? I've only got the speedo but mine was apex about 90mph and it definitely had more entry in it than I was giving(southern fairy) Savage speed out of Graham hill bend though!! (who am I to advise? Your 3 secs quicker than I am lol)
Interesting all the time attack laps I've seen take the entry into clearways very slow and tight and then get the car straight and shoot it out. Are you on the brakes trailing the whole time until you straighten? I'll try that next time out!

No you're right. Too early into paddock, not by too much, but it means I'm correcting steering angle mid corner. Apex speed is approx 90mph. Entry to Druids is fine, but I don't unwind the steering soon enough, so I'm too tight on the later part of the corner. I did try other lines, but if I used the curb on the exit then I suffered with oversteer trying to get back over left for Graham hill. GH is fine, and surfees is good (100mph just before the turn in to Surtees ha ha). Clear ways is an absolute B¥$^$¥ard! I'm hard through Surtees, then quite late on the brakes keeping in a straight line before clearways. Then it's feathering the throttle round clearways till I can get the power down. I usually have all my braking done by/during Mcclaren so I've scrubbed enough speed to get round clearways initially tight. I've tried the wider line, and it's understeer central!
Honestly on r888's I'd have smashed it, the Pirellis are a very different animal.

I'll give it ago tight next time. I can't say I've tried it that tight before so it maybe something to do with the slight hill coming into clearways as you turn in.

Just as predicted the heavens opened, so warm up was done in torrential conditions. With so much standing water a decision was made to just use it as a shakedown. Having had a few repairs done in between rounds, I just wanted to make everything was ok. Most importantly I kept it on the black (just) and gained valuable "wet" info.
Having made a few changes I went out in practice with the aim of getting some quicker laps in, as at that point it was touch and go as to whether the rain would continue. The changes felt great but the whole session was frustrating. I just couldn't find a clear piece of tarmac, and the traffic just didn't go my way. Again good wet info learnt, so not a complete loss.
The weather took a turn for the better, and all of the forecasts showed dry for the rest of the day. An especially long break over lunch also helped, so when the time came for quali it was a totally dry setting.
After building some heat in the tyres I started putting some quicker laps in. The car felt great, and the harder I pushed the better it felt. Starting on a hot lap I could see the predictive time come down and down, but in the final sector I came up against traffic which lost some time. I came over the line in 1:35.4, which was a new CLUB FWD record, and at that point stood me in p1. Knowing there was more time in the car I pitted for a tyre pressure check, and a little cool down. Unfortunately on my outlap there was a red flag incident which cut the sessions short.
With traffic having been an issue at times as soon as we were released on the track for the final I got past as many cars as possible. While getting the tyres up to temp I again managed to find a decent amount of space and started putting hot laps in. The times again started coming down, and as I started a"hot" lap the predictive was telling me I was on a flyer. Again in the distance traffic lay ahead, but as I reached them they showed great awareness and left the track clear for me to get past. I past the line in 1:34.9, again a new CLUB FWD record, and first in class. There was approx 5 mins left, so I came into lower the tyre pressures, and went straight back out to try and get one last flyer. Unfortunately as I came to the end of my outlap yellow flags and a stranded car meant that I would really be able to better my current time.

Final Result
4th overall
First in class
New CLUB FWD record

It was a brilliant day overall, and great to see Jeff join us in Rexy. If it had stayed wet I have no doubt he'd have been top of the shop, and on any other dry day there would have been a blink of an eye between us.

Where do I start to thank people? I'm a little overwhelmed by the pace in the car tbh, and in my own mind I need to replicate the form to believe it wasn't just a one off.
Looking from 2 years ago and "grindergate" and the final today it's an almost unbelievable difference, and although I'm not sure I would necessarily want to do it all again its certainly helped to heal some of the mental scars.

To beat 4-500 bhp boosted cars is such an achievement, compared to last year both me and the car have come on so much.

From last years round I was over 5seconds quicker :)

Your getting abit too good at this time attack now really....

I'm putting it down to dumb luck, and probably the fact that quite a few of the front runners weren't on form ha ha

Well I suppose all good things must come to an end. It's with a little tear that the EK has gone to a new home. Whether I live to regret it I suppose only time will tell, but I know the new owner will get as much enjoyment as I did, so that's something.

An eg SiR has been purchased as a rolling shell, so the build begins again. Hopefully knowing what to do (and more importantly what NOT to do), it should be pretty straight forward, and this time I have a very clear vision of what I want it to end up like.

TBC.....:)
