Been having a problem with my neighbour with regards to supplying my garage with electric.

Months ago I was running an extension lead from my house into my garage just so I could use a lead light, only for a couple of hours while I was doing some jobs.
To get it to the garage I had to run the cable over his driveway which he said was fine, I asked beforehand.

The next day he came out and told me that he was terrified that someone would fall over the cable on his drive and sue him. I was like ok I'll try and resolve this. I made a massive sign and had high visibility items and made sure there was no way you could trip over it, so thought yep all good. No he then really kicks up a stink about it. Starts mentioning deeds of house etc.

I lost it at this point. Had a bit of a moan etc, he then concluded I had to run the cable out into the road (around his driveway) and back into my drive, as long as it didn't touch his land.

Which I did, but at this point it was getting stupid. So I stopped altogether and said to him that I would save up and get it done properly by using armoured cable underground etc. He was ok with that at the time.

This is a man that I bend over backwards for, give him all sorts of things, work on his car, you name it I do him a favour. But for me nah!

Also this is a man that has electric in his garage, but by running a sub standard extension lead that he has buried underground! With no armouring, not properly insulated! Not fit for the job! Under gravel etc to his house. Which I pointed out is dangerous but hay.

Anyway, had an electrician round last night to quote and plan where to lay the cable. I need permission off him to go underneath 2 of his paving slabs to access my garage.

So this evening went to have a chat about it.
Turns out he isn't keen as he thinks it's dangerous!

Says the man that runs an extension lead to his garage permanently with no protection!

I totally understand it's his land and he can do what he wants but my god it's frustrating.

Now waiting for him to make a decision.....

Thoughts on my situation?

Rant over

Sounds like a right **** tbh! Not sure where you stand legally but if it's a battle of wills he wants I'm sure you could make his life just as difficult.

I'd find out where to stand with regards to getting electric ran to your garage and what you can and can't do running the cable.
If not a very loud generator ran for afew evenings may persuade him.

Yeh I don't doubt I can make his life difficult! But I really don't want to go down that route but it's getting to a point where I might have to.

I've looked into rules and regs, I'd be following all regulations with regards to laying the cable etc but I still need permission from him unfortunately :(
I can't have an over head cable (it states in our deeds I can't).

The way I see it there's just no need for being so difficult. Like you said, a nice noisy generator may do the trick! Good idea

Yeah generally keeping the piece with your neighbours is a good idea.
So i take it you can't run it down the drive and around the border of his property and back to the garage?
Probably need some sort of permission from local council for that I'd imagine.

He sounds like a right busy body to me. I mean no one is going to sue him for tripping over a cable you layed. If the cable is over his property then the person falling over it would have to be on his property to do so....
I'll bet he doesn't mind having the lead for his lawn mower all over the garden lol

Well yeh that's the only other option I have, it would cost a lot more money as the cable would have to be about 35+ meters long! And when the cable is nearly £10 a meter it all adds up. And also dealing with the council will be a nightmare.

You've hit the nail on the head there! A busy body! He has nothing better to do or worry about basically.

You know he's worried about an armoured cable underground that he will never see! Yet he runs an extension lead that is not insulated or weather proof to his garage!

Think this guy is my neighbour

Let's just hope he sees sense and let's me do it. Fingers crossed

The good thing it's dark at 4pm, so you can run a generator from 4 till 10pm and he cant do ****... He'll change his mind soon :)

I would say something along the lines of this:

I don't want to keep bugging you about getting power to my garage, so if you would just let me do this, you will never be bothered about it again.

Also, let him it is not going to affect him in any way at all (outside the installation time), and that it is the best option for the both of you.

Best of luck!

Not the best option, but with regards to the overhead line, does it forbid it in the deeds or in the covenant?

If it's in the covenant, then I believe this can only be enforced by the house builder. If the house is any more than 10 years old( no longer under builder warranty) then usually they don't give a shīt!! I would look into the building regs to see if overhead is viable and maybe revisit the idea?

I know I've explained explained this to him and he doesn't care! he'd rather argue with me. He's a thick old dodger that has nothing better to do with his life (other than make mine difficult). Anyway he has booked his landrover into my work for an MOT and Service on the 14th...... better not give me the Mot, I'll probably write it off!

Ah cool, I'll look into that. I think it was on my deeds unfortunately, but will have another look.

Time to get a generator. Take the silencer off the exhaust and whack a metal cone on to amplify the sound lol

Ha-ha yea I have seen in his build thread fair play

The bloke sounds like a right nob*ead bit like my neighbour

Hope you got it sorted in the end

My neighbour is a racist old goat with mental problems. Beat that

:lol:Haha yes the front room is now my engine building area.

We never sorted it, I just run an extension lead out to my garage. He doesn't say anything anymore, we get on now to be fair.
He's just an old busy body with nothing better to do than stick his nose in.

I've even got him into Hondas! He now has a Honda Jazz! And he thinks the sport button is the best thing on the planet.

Haha my grandads just got a 1.5 turbo mobility car thing.
He genuinely thinks it's the fastest thing on the road lol

Have you ever taken him out in your car?!?!? If not invite him out for a drive

Nah we don't talk much, plus he's 81 and abit fragile.
I genuinely think it would give him a heart attack.

Probably would struggle to get in with the cage!
I said I'd take my neighbour out in mine when it's back together!
He is well up for it
