Hello,
I'm currently looking at swapping the stock b16b out my ek9 and am toying with the idea of going K, if not it will be a medium built b18c staying n/a with the aim of around 230hp.
Firstly, I have about £4k to spend on this ln top of what my b16 and current useless parts sell for, so near £6k.
I will do the majority of work myself other than tuning :)

What I want to know is, what's the negatives of going K rather than a built b18?
Ignoring budget, ive read Into it a lot, just Putting the question out there.
Anyone regretted doing the swap?

I'm not going boost, so don't even mention it :))

Cheers guys

The only negative is the cost and teething problems with people cutting corners with the K swap.

Other than that, K20 - IVTEC and 6 gears = win.

Cutting corners?

You mean cheap parts, not swapping to the eg/dc2 subframe etc?

u dont NEED to swap the subframe.

but cutting corners like, not using the adequate driveshafts, not using proper fuel systems and wiring etc.

Nuno.

Pretty much decided that for the hassle it possibly saves in future it would be worth it :)

And okay, I see :)

...having to do it. lol
but if done right it can be very nice.

There are no negatives. Bolt the whole lot in, some quality bolt ons, k-pro, 240bhp minimum, great fuel economy, Torque, 6 gears.

there are negatives...cost lol

to do what you have mentioned above you could buy a MINT 98 spec dc2 and just enjoy it.

I have a mint facelift ek9, I don't want a dc2.
I want something quicker hence the k swap question, the fact you could buy a different car with the money isn't a negative of doing if,

Everyone knows its expensive :)

Not that expensive if you are smart about it. I will prove you can do a K swap for good money.

Started doing it so will post up exactly what i've spent.

If i fail, hey hoe worst case scenario i still have a k series...

Insurance? Not really sure if there will be a huge difference between K20 And B18?

Worth looking into.

Murray

i will hate you ... because i wish i had money to do it haha , seriously apart from getting it done and cost , dont belive there is any negatives .. go for it

This has turned into 'guess the negatives'.
K is heavier engine.
Insurance is a small hike, no big deal :)
B18 would take more money than a k would to the 240ish hp mark and not be as nice to drive :)

b series with gear box is around 380/390 pounds or 176(ish)kg
k series with box is around 360/370 pounds or 165(ish)kg

Most sources I have seen put the K20 more at around the 390 range....

Don't think weight is much of a big difference really. As to calculating which actual setup is lighter, then that will be down to what is used in the built and what is fitted i.e PAS, oil coolers ect.

Main down side as it seems to me, other than the cost and making sure you get all the right parts, is the sump clearance. I don't like the idea of a low hung sump.

Plus correct me if Im wrong, but don't K20 suffer from oil starvation or oil pump problems as it is?? Or is that another myth?

They suffer from oil starvation above 8600rpm as the oil cavitates in the oil pump. This can be solved by get an earl modified S2000 oil pump. Most K20's don't rev past that though so its not a big problem
