Hi All - First off pardon my ignorance - a friend of mine just gave me a 1998 Honda Civic with an Automatic transmission. Being an automotive enthusiast for some years now I'd like to touch on the possibility of swapping the engine and converting the car to a manual transmission, but I'm not familiar with Civics or the process of changing a car from auto to manual.

I guess I am wondering:
Is it worth my time to attempt this?
Is it reasonable, cost wise?
Anyone in the forum completed this?

Just throwing it out there, any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance....

i think its possible...try to search some of the threads here if im not wrong it has been already tackled here...goodluck

I did this on a eg6 Civic VTi and can honastly say it is not worth all the hassle. Get 1yr mot on it, sell it and then just buy another one.
Dunx

How much do you value your time really is the real question there as length of time varies between ppl. Length of time is dependent on your skill level, having a complete parts list on hand and availability of proper tools.

A sum of money reasonable or not is really an opinion based on spending habits and your project budget. I think its well worth it if you plan on keeping the car. The end reward is so pleasing knowing you've accomplished this conversion yourself.

I too have done an auto-manual swap on a 1998 Civic Dx w/B16B swap and i'm so glad its no longer automatic. There are certain write-ups i've bookmarked on my pc that helped me along the way that I have no problem linking you to them if you are serious about this.

Good luck on whichever route you choose to go with.

If you have any info readily available that would be great!!

I got out of the car scene for a variety of reasons about 4 or 5 years ago, but getting this car has given me a chance to jump back on board. I have the facility and tools to be able to work on this for an undetermined period of time so if it is possible (which I now know it is) I am definitley going to tackle this project. I've built a couple cars over the years, but am excited at the prospect of building a civic seeing that so many quality parts and resources are available...

Thanks for head up! =)

Np man here is a good write-ups on Honda-Tech/HondaCivicForum that I frequently used to get me going on the right track.

[FAQ] 96-00 Auto to Manual Swap in full detail!! (44pics) - Honda-Tech
Auto to Manual Conversion - HondaCivicForum.com

I used the original automatic harness and just converted it to accept the new DOHC/VTEC motor/trans and surprising enough I was able to retain most of my stock D-series motor mounts. I believe I had to run the reverse signal direct but the write-ups will explain this part.

Any questions just ask away i'm going to subscribe to this thread as of today. Good luck. :D

I should be picking up the car in the next week or so, going to strip the car and check the condition then start building my parts list.

Thanks for the links...
