I'm needing a new key for my coupe cause the key is really worn and doesn't turn easily in the barrel.
I've got the red key so can get another key cut no problem. But I'm not sure what the situation is with the immobiliser/key transponder.
I've got an obd1 ecu so the ecu doesn't have an immobiliser, but the green key light operates as it would on a standard car, and the red key doesn't start the car, as you'd expect. So the car still has some form of immobiliser. Also has an aftermarket alarm on it.
Is there an immobiliser ring on the ignition barrel? If so, can I just order a new key from Honda and code that in? I bought a blank key online but can't find any way of splitting the oem key without destroying it!
Wanting to check before ordering cause those keys are expensive!

I bought two blank keys from sims auto parts for my Ek9 as I only have one key but haven’t had them cut yet. Was kind hoping it would just be a matter of cutting the keys but not sure about immobiliser so I’d be interest to know the answer to this also. What year is your car?

From what I’ve read jdm cars don’t have an immobiliser but uk ones possibly do so will depend on your model I reckon. I am just going to get mine cut and give it a bash. I have a spoon ecu and I don’t think there is any immobiliser in that so hopefully be ok.

It's a 1998 UK car, I'm thinking it might have an immobiliser reader on the barrel but can't find anything definitely to say yes or no. I definitely don't have one in the ecu so guessing I must have one elsewhere

Honda from 1998 in europe all are immobilized, 100% , civic keys are chipped id13 megamos and will require the key to be programmed by diagnosstic tool, well equipped locksmith could programm it.

I had same problem, I also have red key ,
So what I done was cut open my original key took the chip out and cut open the side of the red key and put the chip into the red key , it's already cut for a chip ,
Then I used a little bit of apoxy to seal the key and make it water proof .
Very simple to do and it's the better choice,
The chip that's in the red key just put into your original key ,
That's incase you need to code another key if you loose your one .
