Love the lockdown project attitude, end goal a VFM track car?

K20 Elise must have been an interesting machine!

Incredible on the track - but as I hinted the K20 just isn't an enjoyable engine on the road. Its totally without soul. I was 230bhp with a map/RBC/tubular manifold.

Perhaps the character shines better in a Civic - not driven one with a k20.

As you say - the Civic is heading towards being my track car for when absolute sun is not 100% guaranteed (Kitcar)

Its so bad I spent £7000 sourcing a Rover based "VHPD" engine/gearbox/exhaust/loom etc to replace it with.
I sold the car before I upgraded it to stock though.

The B-Series I adore though. Funny how we are all different?

I expect a lot of K20s are getting tugged out of EK9s right now too.

Because people are seeing the prices the ek9 are going for completely stock

Im keeping my k24 frank turbo in my ek9.

Iv always wanted to drive an elise with a kswap but im afraid i wont be able to fit

Oh yes without a doubt. K24 Turbo - my word I bet that's crazy.

If you do make sure its on a track. I've had a VX220 Turbo (and another one that was supercharged) that was just more fun on the road! My 2.8L kit car killed the Exige for me - its all snorting, roaring torque.

I think maybe the K/B/F engines are best in a FWD shell for road use - my buddy has a F20A (JDM) Westfield we built and thats also dull on the road despite about 500BHP/Tonne. On the track I expect that one will be insanely good.

Did some other non-pictured stuff:-

* Bought replacement Skunk2 bushes and swapped a couple out for some slightly loose ones on the RTAs.
* Removed the rear caliper brackets and re-lubricated the slides as there was an occasional squeek
* Added a couple more fixings to the interior rear quarter mouldings
* Had a drive in it (!)
* Added a couple more fixing to the sill cover/skirts
* More general painting and rust proofing.

Still working on the Civic:-

Added the Black 3 piece brace back in.I suspect its mostly for side impactprotection, but will certainly massively affect stiffnessof the body too.

Took it for a drive. Started misfiring when pulling from idle. Wheels scrubbed at the front so adjusted for that.

Checked the injector spray pattern and ran through some Wynns Injector Cleaner for good measure, but decided it was likely ignition related.

Its an original Honda [TEC] 1998 dated dizzy! Pretty sure only the 23yr old cap was actually at fault. I guess this shows why genuine parts make sence!

Bought some seatbelts (From Germany) and went about fitting rear interior.

Found the black plastic inner plastics were pre-facelift and didn't fit over the stiffening member. Had to cut this shape of plastic each side:-

Parcel shelf just arrived in the post too. :)

Done a few more bits on the civic after a pause where I was working on the Porsche.

* First up I replaced the rest of the poly bushes in the RTAs as a couple looked a shade worn.

* The rear engine mount is an adapted EG style mount and was hitting metal, so this was modifed with a welder and grinder.

* Bought a parcel shelf which finished off the rear for when its in "road mode".

* The number plate recess has long had a load of holes in it and looked scruffy. Took it off the car for a paint.

Before:-

* Then I had an idea to use a Y21/S4C gearbox to change the ratios to be shorter, while keeping the LSD and 4.3 FD from the S9B gearbox.
The 4.3 and 4.4 FDs are so close you wonder why they made both! The 4.8 is a decent bit different however!

Sam (on here; "Quartet" thread) kindly sorted me out with a Y21 from a VTI with a worn 3rd synchro as a donor.
I'd swap over the main shaft, 2nd 3rd and 4th gears.

This in effect makes a "poor mans" 96 Spec S80 or EK9 S4C gearbox.

The S9B ratios were, I'm guessing, designed for the extra low end torque made by the "dual runner" intake manifold on a stock B18C4.

Some different box ratios plotted below showing the S9B Mod box (as well as my old super short racer box in orange).
You can see the light blue and dark blue lines are almost the same.

Its important to be observant and organised when reassembling as there are a lot of parts!
It drives much better now! A great road/track balance.

* Lastly on reassembly I fitted a shiney new (J&R) O/S driveshaft.
This is because the play to the centre shaft spline was quite high and I could occasionally hear it.

Also put the 15s back on (as they have AD08RS) which has perked it up a bit.

Have borrowed some alignment gear so looking at that next!

Many thanks!

I decided the new pads warranted new discs too - and got a great deal on Brembo parts from a EuroCarParts sale - £43 for 2!

Managed a wee drive to bed them in.

Then got going with the toe kit.

First up a Check:-

A touch of toe out at the rear - it should be about 6' and its more like 13' but not bad:

AM-JKLWdJ0DL-yu1e2UkL4nw6eYnVC5ApgDxZM0yO54-llqJIHmS9Obav6ToCCrjV7le-R3VoXH0Xh2cV4GMebgZZYzkDmB3BprSYTvdIGrANrlvw3UsmmP2cUfgbZjoXMDpHdUhouehjREhrCdsrwwhi6iyhg=w1502-h845-no

Front however:-

Well over 2 degrees of toe in!

After adjustment (this time I used the gauge backwards, so here it indicates a few minutes of toe-in:-

Camber I also have looked at, and added camber to the fronts to about 1.5 degrees. Looks like the rears are running a bit much and will sort that next.

Got a little advice from Rippu and decided to up the camber a bit.
Went for -1.75degrees front and -1.25 degrees rear.
A little toe-in front and rear.

Got the car to Croft after a stop in Whitby.

Got the brakes rather hot...
Smoking Brakes

It was damp in the morning and wet in the afternoon but the car was great, especially in the wet. A bit off-pace in the dry.

The geometry was perfect for the conditions, though the setup was very safe/understeer biased and there was a lot of body roll.

This isn't a massive shock- the car has the standard EJ9 22mm ARB front, and the standard zero ARB rear.

Had a crack at forcing rotation with a big stamp on the brakes in the final hairpin, but never got it perfect:-

A wee skid!

Some ARBS on order.

Also an update on my spiralling costs!

The progress looks good, you surely know what you want for this car considering the purchase list that you have indicated. Good luck, and I am excited to see how this build will turn out.
