Well Ill be getting my s4c gearbox rebuild and while at it I was thinking it might be worth my while to change the final drive to 4.7 from a 98 spec s80.

If I change the final drive then I want at least a longer 5th because I do a lot of motorway driving so want to be able to cruise at 120km without a bangin headache and not to be drinkin petrol at high revs.

This is what im thinking would suit me best gearing wise, 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th from the s4c or 96 spec s80 with the 5th and 4.7 fd from the 98 spec s80. This will give me the longer 5th will suit motorway while still having nice short gears in 2nd 3rd and 4th.

The question I have is will this give me any noticable difference in the real world? I understand the idea of different final drives and ratios etc but is it acctually worth the extra money considering I will have to buy an s80 to take the final drive and 5th gear out of?

sorry its a bit long winded but I wanted to explain my situation in full to get a proper answer.

cheers,
Paul.

Pity it wasn't easier to just do a swop as I want the 4th and 5th you have and seems your looking the 4th and 5th I have in my 98 spec dc2 box.
And if your doing lots of motorway yes it be worth it.
If I find 4th and 5th and fit them I can sell you mine.

It makes a massive difference having the 4.7 fd fitted. I run a s4c with 4.7 fd and I don't mind the higher revs in 5th because it pulls so well.

I find it roughly the same as I can drive in a higher gear through town etc and have dropped my motorway speed down a bit.

so am I better off just sticking a 4.7 fd into my s4c then? can these be bought on their own or will it be crazy money?

If you purchase the oem 98 spec final drive you must also be certain that it includes the first gear, distance collar and needle bearings. The alternative is to purchase an MFactory unit which will be a direct replacement. Please contact me for details via the information in my signature below.

id rather buy one from an s80 thats being broke that way I could get the 1st gear, distance collar and needle bearings provided they were in good condition aswel but ill keep the m factory kit in mind thanks for the info

M factory FD kit gets my vote. Excellent quality and straight forward swap.
