How to Build & Upgrade the Steering Rack

So what rack ratio is in the ek9? Same as dc2 and other integras or same as other civics? My brothers got an integra steering rack I could butcher but from how heavy my steering is already I'm not sure going even shorter would be a good idea

I'm not completely sure what ratio the EK9 is and if it's the same as the DC2 at all. Yes, obviously the tighter/shorter steering ratio, the heavier (more effort) the steering will be. LOL. I've been used to driving manual steering for 7 years so a bit more effort isn't even a problem for me. It's not even that bad. LOL. That's probably why Honda didn't make manual steeringer for less than 4.0 LTL, though. LOL

Ek racks are all the same ratio.

No, they are not. EK power steering rack is a 8 tooth pinion producing a ~17:1 ratio with a 3.6 LTL. EK manual steering rack is a 7 tooth pinion producing a ~20:1 ratio with a 4.0 LTL. If you are talking about just the rack shaft itself, then they are the same because the teeth count and pattern is identical. If you are talking about the entire steering rack and pinion, then no.

Sorry Michael I was talking about power steering racks as it's not a common conversion here in Ireland to run no power steering in road cars!

Hi Michael, good video but what I didnt understand was the the disassembling of the entire rack, did you do this for servicing the rack or was there a reason behind it ?
also I have the normal pas rack in mine, do I just need the dc2 pinion to make this work to keep my pas aswel or do I need to disassemble the entire rack like you did ?

Sorry if it was covered but I must of missed it hence why im asking.

Yeah I've only just converted my ek9 rack to manual, pretty similar way that you have done. I love it also, you can really feel the point of grip when you turn the wheel. Will test my LTL and see what I come up with. Then do the dc2 rack and see what that says.

I disassembled it completely because I wanted to depower (gut) the power steering rack to completely convert it to a manual rack while I was swapping the pinion. If you want to keep your power steering but want to upgrade your steering ratio to the Integra's 3.2 LTL (16.1:1), then you don't disassemble the whole thing but only change the pinion to the Integra's.

Thank you, that will save me a lot of money, was going to buy a complete ek9 rack.

Nobody had ever mentioned "quicker steering" as a difference between the dc2 and ek9, a lot of people have owned both and I've never heard anyone comment on the steering being any different is what I'm getting at. Leads me to believe they are the same?

No, wait! I gave you the details about the NON-EK9 Civics. I don't know any information about the EK9s.

Yeah, mines a non ek9
buying the dc2 pinion will save me money on buying an ek9 rack is what I'm saying lol

Shame no one wants to split the pinion from the rack though.

What do I need, just the cover and pinion ? Everything else is interchangeable ?

You'll need the U-Joint coupler from a Civic/Integra Power steering rack and you'll need a power steering Civic rack to swap with.

does anyone know if this is the same for a DC2 rack? as in same method to remove power steering?

cheers

I thought that all hatches in the US used a manual rack? or is that just with the CX?
